I refer to Gayle Newland. 6 and a half years. Why? Unbelievably harsh. Help me understand. www.google.co.uk/amp/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/40668960

She tricked a woman into having sex with someone she thought she was in a heterosexual relationship with, by creating a web of lies to get her own way!

I don't think it's harsh at all.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 20/07/2017 19:25

Sorry, I don't think it's harsh at all.

DisorderedAllsorts · 20/07/2017 19:25

Do you think that because she was a woman she should have been given a lighter sentence? The sentence was correct because she essentially raped someone.

PsychoPumpkin · 20/07/2017 19:26

Confused why exactly do you think it's harsh??

Sirzy · 20/07/2017 19:27

How is that harsh?

Saiman · 20/07/2017 19:27

Cant see the issue

Whosthemummynow · 20/07/2017 19:28

It's a crazy case

DonaldStott · 20/07/2017 19:28

I was also going to say rape, but I wasn't sure if that was the correct phrase, but coercion, lies, deceit, penetration under false pretences, I think it was rape.

toryalane · 20/07/2017 19:29

The 100 hours worth of dates under the blindfold?

I'm willing to accept that I may be biased because she's a woman.

6 and a half years - it just seems such a huge sentence in comparison to say a drink drive wipe out of an entire family.

wowbutter · 20/07/2017 19:30

Isn't this the age where women can be men and vice versa? And it's all down to how you identify?

Maybe Gayle identified as a lesbian, man, with a penis, but didn't want surgery?

I think considering proper rapists don't get that long, it's a bit over the top.

MollyHuaCha · 20/07/2017 19:30

It is a bizarre case...

I think the deceived woman must be a VERY vulnerable person. Poor thing.

DonaldStott · 20/07/2017 19:31

it just seems such a huge sentence in comparison to say a drink drive wipe out of an entire family.

Yes the laws are crazy for driving offences, I agree. But the aren't comparable.

Lucked · 20/07/2017 19:33

And here a man films himself raping a 3 year old and gets 45 months.

Reported on the same day on the BBC.

toryalane · 20/07/2017 19:34

Donald - I agree and don't want to play 'Top Trumps Crime' as it were. But 6 and half years with a hundred hours of blindfolded dates behind them?
What if Gayle had been a man and said she were a pilot with blonde hair?

The woman she raped consented to a "man" she had been chatting to on line, not a woman named Gayle

It sounds to me like Gayle was perhaps a closet lesbian and felt her only way to try to sleep with a woman was by tricking a heterosexual woman into thinking she was a man

It's all very bizarre but ultimately I do think she deserves a tough sentence. Just wish they were always this tough on rapists, and Particularly anyone who have harmed a child

user1480334601 · 20/07/2017 19:37

Lucked that is beyond horrible Sad

What kind of deterrent is that giving to others?

bumblebeebuzzing · 20/07/2017 19:40

Lucked that is horrendous, he deserves life and medical castration.

The woman lied and used her lies to trick a woman into sex, she raped her, her sentence isn't harsh, it's just others are to weak

toryalane · 20/07/2017 19:42

User 148 - I think your thoughts on the motives are probably spot on - but surely we have to think once this 'game' starts and you're 100 hours in, that sex is consented to that perhaps the 'game' is enjoyed on both sides?

I asked to help me understand because it's important for me to see both sides of a debate and my position is not unmovable.

OP posts:
PigletWasPoohsFriend · 20/07/2017 19:44

that sex is consented to that perhaps the 'game' is enjoyed on both sides?

No not at all

TurquoiseOwl · 20/07/2017 19:48

Of course it isn't harsh Hmm you absolutely wouldn't be saying this if it was a man.

toryalane · 20/07/2017 19:55

Ok Owl - what's the male equivalent? I'm being genuine here.

OP posts:
LellyMcKelly · 20/07/2017 19:59

She raped a woman. I'd say the sentence is fair

NotYoda · 20/07/2017 20:00

She did not consent to the sex she was having. It's a sexual assault.

It wasn't a "game" to the victim

You weren't on the jury, this was the second trial, and she was found guilty. What is there to '"debate"

icelollycraving · 20/07/2017 20:01

Clearly the game wasn't enjoyed.
Yabu.

DaisysStew · 20/07/2017 20:01

I don't think it's harsh but I do think that most sentences given for rape are unduly lenient, which makes this sentencing seem harsh.

Lucked It's horrifying isn't it? That poor child (baby really) and their parents will be dealing with the after affects of this long after that disgusting pervert has finished his sentence.
