Hi everyone.

I've got an interview coming up next week for a communications role.

I have experience in journalism but not directly in PR and communications.

In previous interviews for PR and communications roles (where I wasn't successful) I've been asked why I'm interested in a career in communications rather than journalism.

My answer was that, when I worked in journalism-related roles, these all involved elements of communication. I've also worked as a copywriter for a digital marketing company, which involved conveying key messages to readers. I would like to work in communications as I would like to build on the insights of engaging and influencing audiences that I gained from my experience in the media.

Does this sound suitable?

Thanks everyone :)

I think I'd probably try to find a more enthusiastic response - emphasize how much you enjoyed these elements and so on. It might be that you suspect you are applying for the comms role as a second choice and therefore that you might leave when something more aligned with your interests comes along.

I agree, your answer is not memorable. You need to make it sound more 'you' and less like a canned answer.

Just to add, I have done many interviews and I would remember stories but not canned answers. Rephrase what you're trying to say by telling a good story. Just my 2 cents or pence, good luck!
