It's basically like an online CV and a "professional" social network platform, in the sense that you can connect (like becoming friends with someone on FB) and see / like things that they post, 99% industry / work related.

Thank you who can see I'm on there though?

I think people can search for you, also the connections of the people you connect to can see you. And you show up when people search for members who work in partial occupations or industries.

To be honest, I have never found it very useful, when I was freelancing I got far work work through other forms of social media.

All I know is I've sent emails to people, some work-related, some personal, and now I keep getting bastarding LinkedIn spam emails inviting me to connect with them. That annoyance alone has been enough for me to stay away from it.

I've been using it for a long while now. It's very useful for me to keep up with tech as I work in a scientific job. Over time you will build up a professional network but be selective. If I sound biased in favour it's because a recruiting agency contacted me via LinkedIn last year and asked if I was interested in a job in Paris. 9 months in and still loving it.

It's a really powerful tool for recruiters to find you or for you to find a job you may be interested in. It's also great for networking.

I've never received spam mail from LinkedIn Confused
