Giving notice on house ..paying double rent? Advice

I'm moving from housing association property to council property.
I've been told I need to give 4 weeks notice, does that mean I would be paying for both houses for 1 month?

Yes

If you give notice as soon as you have an almost definite moving date then you will pay both rents from the day you sign new tenancy. We did this and only paid rent for both properties for one week. Also if you get housing benefit you can apply for an overlap where they'll pay the rent on both but only AFTER you've moved out of the first place and handed back your keys

If you move from one rental to another usually you give notice and then start your new tenancy when the old one has finished. Usually you will have to pay a deposit for the new rental before you have the deposit returned from the old rental so you will be out of pocket for a while. If you are moving rentals before serving your notice period you will need to pay rental for both the properties that you have rental agreements for. It is usual to wait for the notice period to expire and then start the new rental contract to avoid paying for two properties at the same time.

You pay rent for each house while you are renting it. If you don't want to pay two months rent move into new house later.

If you are on housing benefit they will pay the rent for both properties. If you are not you may be able to get the housing association to wave the notice period

You would usually try to time the new tenancy so the overlap is just one day.

E.g. give notice on 28 June so you'll be paying rent until 28 July (I've used a calendar month to keep it simple) and starting the tenancy on the new place on 28 July. You're only paying double rent on 28 July.

Personally I like the overlap to be a little longer so moving is less stressful.
