Now , I know this isn't an AIBU but I am in a panic and worried I will get everything all wrong. DS1 is 16 next week. He's not really a very typical 16 year old. He's quiet reclusive and sits inside all day. He has already requested a table tennis table and some books about politics (yes, honestly!) but I want to get him the traditional mother's gift in our household of clothing. He lost a Top Man hoody a while back he actually quite liked (as far as his enthusiasm ever goes...)but for a 16th I feel it ought to be a brand. so, the question is, what brand are the boys wearing at the moment? I am a teacher, so you would think I would know but al I see is a sea of sixth formers in identical white t shirts and jeans. I know this is a potential big fail ( I remember once 'forcing' him to wear a GAP t shirt and him having a panic attack). He's not bothered about fashion but won't want to stick out. So, what is ;in' : Holiister still? Jack Wills? I sense Superdry is out...or something else? What about trainers ? What style, brand and colour?
DS2 got teased for wearing beige trousers recently.... who knew??

Please help! I have 24 hours to sort this out!!

I think Hollister is still acceptable (better be, I've just splashed out and got DD a couple of things from there).

I have DC about the same age, and they both have (and like) pale grey marl hoodies.

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2017 13:13

Grey, eh? he actually moans if I buy him grey ... but maybe not in a hoody...

Thank you!

Asked my 18 DS for you. Hollister and jack wills are always good. Otherwise go for a sports brand.

Trainers are fine whatever brand but go for the ones that are solid colour with a white sole. Dark red or black are currently in.

Hth

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 20/07/2017 13:14

Why not just ask him. Or buy him a voucher for a clothes shop?
Im not sure how happy is have been with my mum buying clothes i hadn't asked for when I was 16.

Ginorchoc · 20/07/2017 13:14

My teen says Adidas.

AuntieStella · 20/07/2017 13:15

This would be the 'safe' grey choice:

www.hollisterco.com/shop/uk/guys-tops/full-zip-icon-hoodie-9790742_02

(you can browse from that link to other ahollister hoodies and see if you can find a short list to show him if you think he's like other colours or more obvious branding)

TheWitchAndTrevor · 20/07/2017 13:16

Give him some money and let him go to town and choose his own?

GreenTulips · 20/07/2017 13:16

Jack and Jones and the trend here

Look at hype as well

hollister has had its day

Therealslimshady1 · 20/07/2017 13:17

Is Superdry out?

My 14 year old loves his Superdry sherpa lined hoodie!

But he does not care about fashion, he loves it because it is soft and warm.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 20/07/2017 13:18

EA7, The North Face or Adidas is the choice of chavvy teen around here ... and Creed Aventus aftershave!

If he likes books on politics then the chances are he would hate all of the above! Hollister is always a safe bet.

DearMrDilkington · 20/07/2017 13:20

Adidas is very popular again at the moment.

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2017 13:20

witch - he doesn't shop.

If I didn't exist he'd probably be naked. As would my DH.

I know I could give him money but he still ahs money from his 14th birthday! He frittered most of that away on cans of drink while on study leave...

He's a fairly old fashioned boy, like they made them in the 80s really!

Both GPs will probably despairingly throw money at him, too, and he will also get money for exam results!

He will expect clothes and books off me and the football shirt is coming out of money from GPs so it's fine , honest!

DS2 has a Superdry bag. DS1 won't use his..

I notice Adidas around more at the mo but I suspect it's a risk.

OP posts:
TheWitchAndTrevor · 20/07/2017 13:23

So you'll just keep buying clothes for him? And keep buying them until maybe one day he finds a partner to buy clothes for him?

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2017 13:25

Interesting about the trainers!

Why so much white at the moment??? Such a chore to maintain! he spills coffee down himself at regular intervals

SueGeneris · 20/07/2017 13:28

Is there something he is particularly into that you could get a hoody from redbubble or somewhere with the relevant thing printed on It? I often do this for DH, so he has a t shirt with a Nissan 350z silhouette on it (used to own one), one with a symbol from one of his favourite videogames, one with another symbol from one of his favourite bands. So it's not overtly THIS IS A PEARL JAM t shirt if you see what I mean, but he knows it is. He doesn't like flashy brand stuff but likes these because they are relevant to him specifically and not too in your face.

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2017 13:28

Yes witch in all likelihood but this is for a Birthday Present so I don't require enablement lectures..

I am happier with him this way than the way some teens are and will happily purchase him clothing.

I prefer a gift to money .

OP posts:
TheWitchAndTrevor · 20/07/2017 13:29

Ok forget the clothes ......

Get yourself a crowbar, leaver him out the house, give him money and tell him to go and find clothes for himself.

TheWitchAndTrevor · 20/07/2017 13:31

Best gift you could give him, is a little indenpences.

TheWitchAndTrevor · 20/07/2017 13:31

*Independence

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2017 13:32

Oh for goodness sake. It's called 'buying a birthday present'

OP posts:
TheWitchAndTrevor · 20/07/2017 13:33

Not an issue if it was only a birthday present..........

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2017 13:34

Thanks for the tip, Sue. He isn't really like that and will be getting a Spurs shirt too but it's a good idea.

He doesn't want a fancy watch or anything. he's actually quite a low budget , undemanding type, which can make it quite hard!

DH will probably tell me off for supplementing the table tennis table with extra gifts!!

OP posts:
DoorsAndWater · 20/07/2017 13:34

Adidas originals, rascal clothing, Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch are in round here depending on the crowd

Angelicinnocent · 20/07/2017 13:34

Yes but this is aibu so expect it op.
