To think we should adopt Angela Merkel as our style icon

Here she is with willowy, gorgeous Kate Middleton.
Kate has obviously given much thought and spent a lot of time on her outfit, hair and make-up.

Angela Merkel, on the other hand, appears to have thought "damn, I've got to waste precious time dining with this unelected pair who, despite their elitist education, can't communicate in German. I'll put on one of my King Jo Un inspired outfits, pose for a quick photo with them, then after lunch I can get on with Important Affairs of State"

AIBU to think Chancellor Merkel makes a refreshing change from clothes horses like Kate, Melania and others whose names don't spring to my fuddled mind at the mo

To think we should adopt Angela Merkel as our style icon

I meant Kim Jo-un

Well, but that's Kate's "job" in a sense, a style icon for the middle classes.

Merkel has another job!

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2017 17:43

Or Kim Jong-un Grin

randomer · 19/07/2017 17:43

Kate and wills are air heads.

zeezeek · 19/07/2017 17:45

I quite agree, but soon this thread will be flooded with sycophantic Royalists who think that Kate is the second coming - rather than a pathetic waste of space and a very expensive education.

Disclaimer - I'm not jealous. I'm just a republican.

I do think that Angela Merkel is a wonderful role model to girls though and just loved the facial expressions when she was dealing with Trump.

Squirmy65ghyg · 19/07/2017 17:45

Yanbu. Merkel has lots more important things to think about.

Thetimestheyareachangingnow · 19/07/2017 17:45

MrsTerry - I did say my mind was fuddled 😄 Obviously this will change when I start channelling Angela!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/07/2017 17:48

Kim Jong-un even, unless you know him and 'Jo' is just your nickname for him Grin
Anyway, sorry but YABU, ever since Tracey Ullman I just can't take 'Mutti' Merkel seriously anymore. And YABU for thinking the royals don't all secretly still speak German at home Grin

Applause! This ^

Chancellor Merkel, a woman who attained her status through individual ability, intelligence, and hard work is an inspiration.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2017 17:51

Angela seems a laugh and gives the impression that zero fucks are given. Except when fucks are required.

Thetimestheyareachangingnow · 19/07/2017 17:52

Judas - I get him mixed up with BoJo

SaucyJack · 19/07/2017 17:58

You'd be even less unreasonable if you hadn't started this thread in the first place.

Doesn't matter what a woman does, it always comes back to her clothes.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/07/2017 18:00

I do think that Angela Merkel is a wonderful role model to girls though Hmm, I'd rather my girls choose a role model that doesn't vote against same sex marriage 'because marriage is between a man and woman' tbh.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 19/07/2017 18:03

For the most part I like our Angie - she's not bothered about looking fancy and just gets on with her job.

Ookmybanana · 19/07/2017 18:08

I love Tracey Ullman's Angela Merkel

Thetimestheyareachangingnow · 19/07/2017 18:08

Saucy Jack - ok, I'll check with you before I start a thread in future.

OP posts:
britnay · 19/07/2017 18:08

I can see why you'd confuse the two

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/07/2017 18:09

saucy jack yes, no offence to OP who is clearly being mumsnetty lighthearted, but I agree. Watching an old episode of Pointless yesterday and was reminded by a question that only a couple of years ago Tory party members could 'win' a shoe shopping trip with Theresa May! She was Home Secretary at the time, the most powerful woman in the country FFS!

VladmirsPoutine · 19/07/2017 18:10

rather than a pathetic waste of space and a very expensive education.

Did you personally pay for her education? I'm no royalist but she seized the opportunity to basically prance about the world wearing very expensive clothes and being called a princess.

I can name quite a few people who I'd consider a waste of space but none of them had the savviness to marry into royalty and basically spend the rest of their days at the gym or wearing pretty dresses or flying on private planes.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/07/2017 18:10

I agree re clothes and women that is, not you being U OP, nothing wrong with a bit of humour Smile

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2017 18:13

Angela Merkel's outfit looks fine. I generally find her dress sense perfectly acceptable - I can't remember what she was wearing. She's the head of state not a fashion model.

VestalVirgin · 20/07/2017 05:53

Merkel may have wasted less time on choosing an outfit than Middleton, but still spent more time on choosing the colour of her blazer than the average man.

I say, we should just all wear black suits.

But we could start with wearing all the same blazer. I have read some stupid people have complained about British female politicians all wearing a similar blazer - and have since been of the opinion that female politicians all over the world should, together, choose an uniform that they wear every damn day, all year round, just like males wear their suits.

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 20/07/2017 06:04

One thing that no one seems to have noticed - Will spent absolutely zero time choosing his outfit, too.

Natsku · 20/07/2017 06:33

She does seem to give zero fucks and I like that. I'd also add Tarja Halonen as a style icon, very little fucks and always seemed to stand out when various world leaders were together. Plus she's just pretty damn awesome - a single mum from a working class background who became president, that's quite a role model.

Catsize · 20/07/2017 08:06

Can't take Merkel, Sturgeon or Dench seriously post-Ullman take-offs. Just brilliant.
