Link here: www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/photographer-in-bizarre-selfie-court-battle-reveals-that-being-sued-by-a-monkey-has-left-him-broke/ar-BBEmWsi?li=AAmiR2Z&ocid=spartanntp

Don't know if anybody knows about this but a man has been fighting court battles over the last couple of years due to a "copyrighted" picture (attached). The reason? Well due to the fact that it's a selfie that the animal took of themselves with the man's camera mounted on a tripod, PETA are suing the man because they think the monkey owns the copyright to the photo. Am I the only one that thinks this is fucking absurd? If they win does the money go to them or the monkey? Confused It's apparently cost the man thousands and thousands of pounds trying to fight court battles and has apparently left him broke and not wanting (or capable) to travel around the world taking photos of animals and wildlife as he did before. He couldn't even afford the flight to America to show up to court in the latest court hearing.

I used to read people blasting PETA but never really paid attention and just thought peoole were being unfair over an organisation that cared for animals but if this is the way they always carry on, well, I can understand people's dislike of them.

I really don't think that monkey wants his selfie, or any money, so yes, they ABVU.

toolonglurking · 15/07/2017 09:15

PETA are the absolute worst!

Gooseygoosey12345 · 15/07/2017 10:12

PETA are deranged. The more I read about them the more I believe that they can't be sane.

Saiman · 15/07/2017 10:14

PETA are awful.

Its not their right to decide this man should have to suffer so they can make apes people in law.

I dont agree with animal testing. But they arent people. That doesnt mean its ok to use them for experiements. But they arent people.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/07/2017 10:18

He doesn't have to suffer, he's choosing to fight it.

I want apes to be treated as humans, it will be so much easier to protect them.

I know we're all pretty liberal and intelligent people on Mumsnet but all over the world people are treating our closest relations as food, objects to torture, disposable so that there will be none left. Cutting off their hands to make ornaments- seriously it still happens.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 15/07/2017 10:30

But the photograph was taken as part of a project to highlight how endangered this particular species of monkey is, and as a result they are no longer hunted and their numbers have increased. The photographer has done them a great service, Peta have done nothing for them. It is hugely unfair and wrong that he is suffering for this. Peta are a bunch of self-serving, publicity hungry loons who actually do very little to help the causes they claim to care about.

claraschu · 15/07/2017 10:30

What Pengggwd said.

MissionItsPossible · 15/07/2017 10:41

What SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed said.

The article says they were close to becoming extinct and the locals used to hunt them. Because the photo went viral they have stopped hunting them and adore them now and it has brought a tourist boost to their impoverished area.

Pengggwd - the photographer has become bankrupt and financially destitute so he doesn't want to concede as he needs the income

(Not saying it's right / wrong etc I haven't an opinion on this yet, but read an interview and was trying to answer your question )

Peta is going to lose the case eventually, that's probably why he keeps fighting. He's going to get a huge payout.

Whichwayyisup · 15/07/2017 13:24

If i press my cats paw on my phone camera for a selfie and post it online will peta sue me? No of course not because there's no money in it for them. Or attention.

MissionItsPossible · 15/07/2017 14:17

Groupie123 I don't blame him. The whole thing is baffling to me Confused and as I said now I can understand some people's comments online how they hate them.

That will be a hard sell when some people don't want to treat humans as humans Sad.
