Weird nature noises

Posting for traffic.....

Just in from walking the dog. In the very thick bramble bushes to the back of our house, there's a strange noise coming from what I assume is some sort of bird or animal.

It's almost like someone spraying repeated short bursts from a spray can, but it's definitely a creature not mechanical IFSWIM. Maybe a bit like the noise squirrels make when threatened, but it's not that.

The dog is obviously desperate to get into the hedge, but I kept her back. I can't see anything, but can hear something fairly sizeable moving about. I'd guess bigger than a rabbit. We first heard it about ten metres away, so it's quite loud.

Do badgers make noises like this? Hedgehogs? Any other ideas?

I reckon it's Hedgehogs mating....goes on for ages, and lots of huffing and puffing!! We had a resident female hedgehog for 5 years ( she lived in a hedgehog house, free to leave, but never did) who used to invite her suitors into our garden....the noise sent our dogs mad! She had babies in our garden.
