To hate adult fancy dress?

We've had a themed dress-up day at work today. I didn't dress up as I can't stand fancy dress, I just don't see the point of it!

It's a novelty for 20 seconds and then you just have to get on with your job in the normal way all day. I was in a meeting about some serious work stuff with Tinkerbell, Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man and it all just felt ridiculous.

Same with parties- why go in some daft costume when you could wear a pretty party dress, outfit, suit, whatever- it's a party, don't you want to look your best, or even just feel relaxed?!
So, AIBU?

I once went dressed as myself and took a Starbucks with me. I went as a hypocrite Grin

I do love fancy dress though. It's fun to be someone else for a while.

Lilmisskittykat · 12/07/2017 15:20

I think lots of people will support you but I love a bit of fancy dress...

Am actually tickled to picture the meeting you've described

bridgetreilly · 12/07/2017 15:22

At work, it's ludicrous and inappropriate. What if you have to deal with a client?

At parties, I'm not a huge fan, but if it's just a general theme I don't mind too much.

BubblesBuddy · 12/07/2017 15:24

At work??? No. Wouldn't float my boat.

Parties can be a bit of fun and the super rich definitely do fancy dress and themed parties. Vast amounts of money spent on theatrical costumes.

I used to choose something rather boring for parties and enjoy the party feeling comfortable but some people love it and spend loads of time getting ready. They must be going out of fashion though because the Fancy Dress hire shop near me has closed down!

SummerMummy88 · 12/07/2017 15:28

I hate fancy dress, it doesn't appeal to me at all. Unless your a child I don't understand why you want to dress up?

MySqueeHasBeenSeverelyHarshed · 12/07/2017 15:35

It's like any other hobby, if you like it you have good reasons why and if you don't you won't understand why anyone likes it. I don't understand why anyone likes football for instance, to me it looks boring and the obsessiveness of some of the fans is over the top, but to each their own.

On the far end of the fancy dress spectrum are professional cosplayers and they are amazing to watch in their attention to detail, how in character they can be and the performances they put on. When it's done well it's spectacular, when it's not it's just a silly bit of fun.

sonjadog · 12/07/2017 15:40

I don't do fancy dress. One of the promises I made to myself when I became an adult was that I would never do fancy dress again.

Rainatnight · 12/07/2017 15:42

I hate it. I don't mind dressing up, as in being glamorous and will take every excuse, but dressing up AS something, because someone told me to, I can't stand.

BadLad · 12/07/2017 15:52

It's not my favourite thing, but I went to a chav-themed fancy dress party once, and thoroughly enjoyed both assembling a costume and the party itself.

isseywithcats · 12/07/2017 15:56

i dont normally do fancy dress cant be bothered but am going to a motorbike rally this weekend with a zombie theme so it will be fun to dress scruffy, make a mess of my hair and wear gory make up for a change

kw1091 · 12/07/2017 16:06

I absolutely love fancy dress. At work I'm not sure I'd go all out but for a party I think it's so fun.

PsychoPumpkin · 12/07/2017 16:08

I hate fancy dress too!

Oblomov17 · 12/07/2017 16:10

Refuse to do fancy dress.

HannahMontannaBeachTowel · 12/07/2017 16:13

I really like it but work with kids though. Don't really get the point of doing it if you work in an office.

VestalVirgin · 12/07/2017 16:25

YABU. It's fun.

I understand that you don't want it at work. Although that meeting sounds hilarious!

But with regard to parties - some people do look their best in a costume.

annasfarmgirl · 12/07/2017 16:27

I'm another one who hates it and doesn't see the point.

However, I know that lots of people really enjoy it and have a lot of fun dressing up, so I must conclude that We Are Being Unreasonable. I suppose I'm missing out, but meh.

blankface · 12/07/2017 16:55

I was in a meeting about some serious work stuff with Tinkerbell, Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man

I'd love it if the minutes of the meeting in the Op stated the attendees as their costume characters, not their real names.

hazeydays14 · 12/07/2017 17:08

I love fancy dress Grin it gives me a project because I usually make/put together my own costume rather than buying the expensive outfits

Can see why you wouldn't want to in an office but at parties I see no issue.

Fancy dress doesn't have to look ridiculous, depends what you're dressing up as. I went as a rather glam dead mermaid last Halloween Grin

5foot5 · 12/07/2017 17:22

It's like any other hobby, if you like it you have good reasons why and if you don't you won't understand why anyone likes it.

I enjoy it but hardly ever get the chance.

wrenika · 12/07/2017 18:01

You wouldn't think much of cosplayers then.
It's harmless. If you don't like it, don't do it, but it can be fun to have a laugh now and then.

MotherofPearl · 12/07/2017 19:06

Another fancy dress refusenik here. I so seldom get the chance to dress up in nice evening clothes these days, so am always gutted if we're invited to a party that stipulates fancy dress!
