My lovely mum, aged 86

Just been to my mum's 86th birthday party. She remarried about 30 years ago and although he has been good for her and is a good man he is as tight as a ducks arse.

It has taken years to put the TV and heating on through the day but we have achieved that. Stepdad has come to realise that £6 a month on Netflix is a good thing.

My mum struggles to walk on her own and if they get a buggy for the car it will get her out of the house in a safe way. Problem is that stepdad is worrying about weight restrictions on his (their) car and that they would need a hoist to get a buggy in the car.

It would prob cost about £4k. To my mind this is what they have been saving up for all these years and that the cost shouldn't make any difference. Anything to make my mum's life easier should be the most important thing.

Stepdad is saying that around £2k is acceptable, not sure how to take it from here. They have more than enough money,I could pay if nèeded but not sure if that is the answer

You could offer to pay the other £2K? I agree you shouldn't have to, but get her out and about while she still can, I think. You don't want to look back with regrets.

Nightczar - you are right. I will offer the difference but suspect that they wont take it. It might just shame him into getting money out of the bank thought.
Thanks

Maybe you should be straight with him and tell him not to repress and treat your mum badly which is basically what he is doing by refusing her a decent and safe quality of life.

Agree. Be straight with him.

Older people do get anxious about money sometimes but he's got a history of being tight...push him! Your mum could have another 20 years in her or more!
