I work for a chain that has both equity and franchise stores. Before going on mat leave I worked for an equity store as a supervisor but we've moved and I found an opening at a franchise store. The franchise sets their own payscale so it pays about £1 less per hour at £7.70 for a supervisor. Not great but they were willing to accommodate my specific shifts and I've not been able to find a better offer as yet. Went in to sign the contract yesterday and they asked how old I am. Because I'm 24 I will be actually be getting £7.20 per hour. I'm a bit gutted, firstly that I'll be getting less than I thought but also that the difference between minimum wage and supervisor wage is not the same as for over 25s. £6.95 is min for 21-24 so I'll get an extra 25p for being a supervisor but if I was 25 I'd be getting 50p extra for being a supervisor. I still signed, I really need to get back to work if only for my own sanity and beggars can't be choosers but AIBU to think that I should be paid the same for doing the same work as someone a year older than me or at the very least be getting the same amount extra for being a supervisor?

The current Tory government does not seem to think so OP

I don't understand how they get away with this. It's age discrimination, plain and simple. Imagine if all the baby boomers had to have their salaries reduced when they hit a certain point. I hope you find something better paid soon.

um... that's just life ?

Also rember under 25s get to use the discount shop because they dont need as much money because food and other living expenses is cheaper for inder 25s (NOT) but it is in the eyes of the government no access to housing benefit (or reduced in some special cases) its a bloody outrage can you imagine what would happen if they said 55+ should be on less money because they are older and so are less productive

worridmum · 11/07/2017 15:39

Umm thats just life is a bloody disgusting thing to say can you imagine what would our lives be if people did not fight for equal rights for women and shrugged their shoulders using the term thats just life

Went, I know it's just life, it my life to be precise. I'm just trying to work out why I don't need as much money as someone a year older than me. To a point you can assume that someone under 18 doesn't have as many bills to pay as those over 18 (not always the case I'm sure) but at 24 I'm paying for everything that I'll be expected to pay for at 25. I'm not looking for a hand out, just equal pay.

YANBU OP. I don't believe there should be a difference in pay based on age.

You can have great employees at 18 or 70, and shit employees at 18 and 70 and everyone needs the same to live on.
