Is it just me or is England one of the worst places in Europe to have a family? Just in terms of how difficult it is to access childcare or to work full time (or even part-time) unless you have reliable and affordable emergency childcare for those days when dc is ill. Even things like state education seem pretty dire nowadays. And the attitudes towards families can be quite hostile as well especially if a family is going through a tough time and would need extra support.

Oh I don't know. I live in south Germany and there's lots of great things but 9 to 5 childcare/after school care is nigh on non existent. The birth rate is pretty low and there is a sort of cultural split between mothers and women who work - I get incredulous looks when I say I am a mum and I have a PhD. Switzerland is worse, more or less the same except they don't have state nurseries as such and don't start school in some cantons till 7. 7!
