This was done on radio 6 yesterday afternoon. Great song.

I think the most likely option is that Sylvia does a ghosting act and never answers her phone again and de friends the unfortunate love interest on FB. Smile

MrShadows · 02/07/2017 13:31

didn't hear that, so was really my random thinking

Is she not his daughter?

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 02/07/2017 13:38

Sylvia would have availed herself of called ID and have no need to involve her mother any more.

Dawndonnaagain · 02/07/2017 13:38

Is she not his daughter?
No, she's pregnant, it's his but she's being sent away to someone deemed more suitable.
(Seen them live quite a few times and Dennis told the full story at one point).

Rachel0Greep · 02/07/2017 13:41

Just trying to think how would the mother get involved if it was by text...maybe Sylvia leaves her phone unlocked and the mother answers the texts, then deletes all the evidence Grin...
Great song!

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 02/07/2017 13:43

Wiki does not mention an unplanned teen pregnancy but then no one mentioned unplanned teen pregnancies in 1972.

I used to think that it was 'Sylvia's Mother's Dead' Blush

maddiemookins16mum · 02/07/2017 13:47

Thanks Maras2, I'll never be able to unhear that now 😆😆😁😁

Me and my pal used to spend hours listening to that song when we were about 13.

He'd probably snap chat her a picture with dog nose and ears and she'd respind with a nice heart/flower filter.

My mum had a neighbour whose daughter became pregnant at 16 in 1965!
She made them get married., but it didnt last.
The grand daughter was brought up by the nan n grandad. Big scandal.
It happened a lot, just covered up more in those days.

Apparently based on a truth:

Unlikely to happen these days - phone box and a single house phone are essential for it to occur!!

The bits where the operator cuts in to ask for 40 cents more for the next three minutes give me flashbacks to when Now-DH and I were students, and he was living in the US and I was in France in 1991, and he had to go to a pay phone with a roll of quarters to phone me, and an automated voice would keep squawking, 'Caller, deposit two more dollars! Do you want to continue this call?' You seemed to get about ten seconds between interventions.

I think Sylvia was telling her mother what to say by writing it down and holding it up on post-its, and that she had no intention of catching the train or marrying someone else, she just just wanted to get rid of creepy-weepy stalker guy.

noeffingidea · 02/07/2017 14:03

I love this song because it instantly brings back the seventies (my teenage years) to me.

winglesspegasus · 02/07/2017 14:15

always thought it was a baby
and him going to war.vietnam was still in full swing.

ppeatfruit · 02/07/2017 14:17

I heard the singer interviewed about the song too and he said, they tried to write the most dramatically (unbelievable) sad song for the country music market and couldn't believe it when it became a huge hit Grin

I think he's quite a piss taker !
