To ask for a pay rise?

In my current job I was initially employed as one of 2 team members to run a kitchen.

My direct boss ended up leaving so I took over his job but before he left he told me his rate of pay which was roughly £2 over NMW per hour. I was being, and still am, paid NMW.

I feel it's unfair that I'm being paid less for doing the same job and want to ask for a pay rise to match his. I have a feeling they will say no but wibu to expect to get one in these circumstances? Surely if I'm taking over the same job I should get the same pay? I'm particularly irked because I realise I have more qualifications and experience than him and yet I'm being paid less!

That's a valid reason to ask for a pay rise! You got a promotion, you should get a pay rise!

Absolutely ask for a raise. Just be sure that you have organized a compelling argument for why you deserve one.
