Orlando without a car

It's a significant birthday for DH and I in 2 years and we wanted to mark the occasion with a memorable holiday.

DD will be 7 by then so we were thinking of Disney world in Florida.

However, DH doesn't drive and the last and only time I've driven abroad I hated it and was really nervous.

Is it possible to do without hiring a car and AIBU to say I don't want to drive over there?

If you stay on a Disney property easily doable. If staying in a villa or hotel not on Disney than a lot of hassle and ballache.

glenthebattleostrich · 28/06/2017 19:28

We are going next year and aren't hiring a car.

Magic express from the airport to hotel and Disney transport to the parks. Uber to discovery cove. / SeaWorld

Pombliboo123 · 28/06/2017 19:29

Not BU to not want to drive... I've been 3 times and never drove however it does look easier than driving over here in the UK.

If you stay on International Drive it's easy enough to get around... buses are cheap and easy, there's the i-ride trolley which covers all of International Drive (It is a LONG road). Plus taxis aren't too expensive and last time we just used Ubers which are cheap as chips!

GeillisTheWitch · 28/06/2017 19:31

Totally possible, DH and I went a few years ago and didn't hire a car. As PP said, the trolley ride goes up and down international drive regularly and a lot of hotels do shuttle buses to the parks.

Dixiechickonhols · 28/06/2017 19:32

Stay on Disney property. It includes bus from airport to resort and back (magical express). Plus all transport whilst there (bus/boat /monorail) Tge free dining deal is good if you are staying in a Disney hotel. The uk free dining deal for 2019 will be released April 2018.
Do look on thedibb.co.uk a really helpful British Disney forum.

Madeyemoodysmum · 28/06/2017 19:33

We did eight days Disney using the shuttles. Then 6 days universal using a few cabs.

belleandsnowwhite · 28/06/2017 19:36

We are staying at disney resort without a car. Disney have good transport. The free disney express airport service only runs from orlando airport amd not sanford airport. We are also spending a few nights at universal studios and will get a taxi between hotels. Universal studios hotel are in walking distance to the parks and they also have buses. We are not doing other parks or attractions but you can book coach trips to the space centre or bus busch gardens.

As you can see people have don't it and found it ok, but I wouldn't.

CaptainHammer · 28/06/2017 19:41

Totally possible, we do it regularly. Uber/shuttles/iride trolley all cheap and easy to use.

Seniorcitizen1 · 28/06/2017 19:43

Been 3 times never hired a car. Most hotels run buses and punlic transport is fine to get to the parks

Angel64391 · 28/06/2017 19:43

Just been this April. No need for a car. Most hotels do free shuttles to the car and as previous posters have said Uber's are cheap and easy to use there. We stayed on international drive - don't fall for the people trying to sell you I-ride trolley tickets and shuttle bus packages! They're either cheaper or in the case of shuttle, free from most hotels

TSSDNCOP · 28/06/2017 19:46

The Disney linked hotel we stayed at had shuttles every few minutes to all the parks and was a short stroll to a open air mall that had loads of restaurants like TGI, steak houses etc. We only got a car to go to cape canaveril.

Angel64391 · 28/06/2017 19:46

Parks I meant, not car sorry!

Unihorn · 28/06/2017 19:49

Been 8 times with no car but we always stay in Disney. We use Uber for universal, SeaWorld, shopping etc. Depending on the location of your hotel or villa you could also use the I-Trolley and Lynx buses, whose timetables are available online. I would definitely recommend staying in Disney though, and not just for transportation proposes

kkkkaty123 · 28/06/2017 19:55

Totally agree with staying on international drive or a Disney resort. The rds are a lot easier than ours op. And you hardly ever get stuck in traffic ( we didn't anyway ). All I will add and this is probably obvious but I'll say it anyway, you won't walk anywhere. It's far to hot and it's not pedestrian friendly so you will need some form of transportation. So no it's absolutely not compulsory to hire a car but do budget for cabs etc. On the odd time we got a cab it was nice as the cabbie would tell us best places to eat etc. Have a great time !!!

LemonScentedStickyBat · 28/06/2017 19:56

It's easier with a car but without one I'd do a week on Disney property and a week on international drive.

kkkkaty123 · 28/06/2017 19:58

Oh def go to cape Canaveral !

Taylia · 28/06/2017 20:06

Thanks everyone. Some very useful info/advice Smile

We stay on i-Drive and get the trolley from one end (Seaworld/Aquatica) to the other (Universal). Booked a hotel taxi to Disney.

Peachypeaches · 28/06/2017 20:25

We just use Uber now instead of driving. Really quick and simple and on our last trip worked out cheaper for us than hiring a car.

Boysnme · 28/06/2017 21:40

Easily doable with Disney transport and uber. We are not hiring a car when we are in Disney but are when we are in a villa. I understand why you don't want to drive over there but in case you reconsider it is really easy.

PUGaLUGS · 28/06/2017 21:57

Driving over there is dead easy.
