Shrinking chocolate bars

AIBU to think that if the cost of producing a chocolate bar goes up, just put the price up? That's literally how inflation works?

Just picked up a sharing bag of M&Ms in the supermarket, there was more air than M&Ms; there was practically nothing in there. If I want to treat myself to a face-stuffing, I'll gladly shell out 10p extra for the privilege of a full portion.

If we carry on like this, surely we'll find ourselves in 2050 with the price of a Dairy Milk unchanged but the bars now weighing half a gram?!

Presumably because most people wouldn't pay more. They'd just get something else. Mass confectionary is catered for the masses - so price point is really sensitive. Brands like Godiva/Hotel Chocolate are based on reputation & so can afford a price hike.

I hate the shape of those sharing bags, trying their best to fool us into thinking it's chock full of caramel nibbles when actually there's 109g in the bag and a load of air.
I'd also happily pay 20p more for the rest of my sweets thanks.

westeringhome · 26/06/2017 19:40

And bags of crisps. I have to double up now! And the Christmas tubs are a joke too, can't fool me with their steeply sloping sides lol

Chocolateisa7adayfood · 26/06/2017 19:40

YANbu. They think we won't notice the bar being a teeny bit smaller (but we do). It's sneaky. I suppose there will come a point when they have to put the price up eventually, when the bars weigh about 1g Grin

PurpleMinionMummy · 26/06/2017 19:46

Yanbu. I laughed at the new 'treat size' Smartie ice creams. Same price, half the size they used to be

harderandharder2breathe · 26/06/2017 19:51

Yanbu

They shrink the packet then put the price up anyway. It's most annoying!

AceholeRimmer · 26/06/2017 19:58

Very sneaky, like what they did to chocolate oranges!

TearsOnTheGround · 26/06/2017 20:05

Remember when "topic" bars used to be smaller than most chocolate bars but now most bars have shrunk to the same size! Angry

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2017 21:57

I'm 56 and they've been doing this for as long as I can remember. Mars bars would gradually shrink at the same price (or not so gradually, in the years of high inflation) and then there would be a 'new' larger size, for a larger price. Not 10p more of course, back in the days when a finger of fudge was thruppence... that'd be a two bob increase!ShockGrin

So no, fear not, you won't end up with a bag with one M&M in it.

KC225 · 26/06/2017 22:09

I remember when Mars bars used to be 360 calories a bar now they are about 260

It's awful. Turkish Delights are gone in two bites now Sad

RebootYourEngine · 26/06/2017 22:22

Its not good for the waistline is it? You fund yourself having 2 bars of chocolate because one is so small that its not enough.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2017 22:29

It's a con calling them "treat size"
It is NOT a treat giving me a smaller bar of choc Angry

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2017 22:48

Does anyone dare do that to you, BigChoc?Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2017 22:56

Not twice, errol Grin

FloatyCat · 26/06/2017 23:24
