To be pretty shocked by Glastonbury 'security'?

Just had a series of excited whatsapp messages from ds. He's at Glasto for the weekend. Ok, how come? He didn't get tickets this year. Oh,mhe says, really great luck. Hmm, I think and joke 'over the fence?' thinking he's got a work freebie or some such.

No. Apparently if you just rock up 'people' can get you in for £120. But he didn't even need to do that. He literally walked in past all the officials without a ticket. I do not condone this even a tiny bit but it's clearly pretty certain to get in somehow if people will travel from London on the off chance.

So that's exactly how secure it is there. That's made me feel more than a little afraid for the whole event. So was all that checking on Wednesday whilst people got heatstroke in the queues just window dressing?

I'm surprised. DD and I went to Leeds festival a couple of years ago and security was really tight to get in.

pipsqueak25 · 23/06/2017 09:59

dd went to 'download' festival in midlands pretty tight there too, armed police too, she had her photo taken with 2 hunky ones ! Grin

MatildaTheCat · 23/06/2017 10:01

I was also unpleasantly surprised.

That's been happening in glastonbury for years. If you know the right people you've always been able to get in u set it over the fence.

PinguForPresident · 23/06/2017 10:03

Completely opposite to my experience in previous years and my friends experience this year. I would very much struggle to believe what he's saying.

My brothers and friends were at the site by 6.30am on Weds, straight into the queues and waited for 3 hours. Everything was searched before they could go in or get wristbanded. Tickets have to have photos on and tickets, wristbands and photos are checked every time you leave the site. Before you are wristbanded they scrutinise the photo to confirm it's you. If you're seen on site without a wristband you can be ejected.

There's absolutely no way what he's telling you is true.

NC4now · 23/06/2017 10:03

Getting intoGlasto without a ticket is nothing new. I guess this year is slightly different because the country is on high alert, but if someone's determined to get over the fence, they will.

MaidenMotherCrone · 23/06/2017 10:04

Sorry Op but I think he's fibbing.

DP was there in a work capacity and security goes to a lot of trouble to make sure people cannot just walk in.

NC4now · 23/06/2017 10:04

Yes, also, be prepared to get kicked out.

PinguForPresident · 23/06/2017 10:05

You can't get over the fence any more. Not for years and years. Have you seen the fence? It's 20 feet high and has anti-climb properties. There are patrols day and night to stop climbers. We were camped very close to it last year. No way was it climbable.

Pre 2002 it was relatively easy to get in over the fence. Local kids used to just cut holes in it and let people through for a tenner. my husband got in this way for many years.

Dawndonnaagain · 23/06/2017 10:08

He's winding you up. It's been almost impossible to get in without a ticket and id for a number of years now. The fences are well guarded and have been significantly altered over the years.

BlackAppleCore · 23/06/2017 10:11

I call bullshit, no way has he just walked in like that.

Floggingmolly · 23/06/2017 10:13

If he really is in there; he'll be frogmarched out before nightfall.

hazeydays14 · 23/06/2017 10:14

I've volunteered as a steward at Glastonbury a few times. We are told not to put ourselves in harms way. If someone charges aggressively toward you, you're told not to try and interfere or restrain them and to leave it to the trained, paid security guards who are sometimes already tackling another person who's made a run/restraining someone who had brought a teddy bear (yes, really) stuffed with drugs/managing violent or drunk people. A few chancers get in this way.

As for over the fence, some people live within the bounds of the festival so sneak people in that way.

Glastonbury is the size of the city of Bath when it's full so it's impossible to have security all along the boundary for the whole festival despite having 24hr stewards/security on the public gates.

MatildaTheCat · 23/06/2017 10:15

Sorry but it is true. No fences involved and no cash passing hands ( although he was willing to do so). They were clearly set up for the big security stuff when the grounds opened and he hit a quieter time or something. He has no reason whatsoever to fib to me.

He may, of course get kicked out but I'm guessing if you keep a low profile it's hard to know who is who once in there.

No way he could just waltz in unless he has very good contacts on the gate!

The security is so tight even when the country isn't on high alert.

The fence is unclimbable with patrols and watch towers/cameras.

You have to cue for hours at the gates waiting for everything to be searched and to receive your wristbands.

I think he may be telling you porky pies! might be worth finding out what he is really up to Wink

WorraLiberty · 23/06/2017 10:18

Has he gone alone or with friends?

spiderlight · 23/06/2017 10:18

Are you sure he's not gone to Glastonbarry by mistake?

WildImaginings · 23/06/2017 10:20

I went a couple of years ago, and no way is this true.

You can't just walk in!

Redsippycup · 23/06/2017 10:21

If he is saying he has just strolled in through an official enterance without showing a ticket or being stopped he is talking bollocks.

Tickets have your photo on them, you are funnelled into 'lanes' and have to pass a ticket check to get your wristband fastened. You are then checked again.
This was in 2008 with no security concerns.

How old is he and is there any chance he is spinning you a line to cover up where he really is?

WildImaginings · 23/06/2017 10:21

Spiderlight Grin

Amanduh · 23/06/2017 10:26

There is no way you can just stroll in the entrance past officials. Absolutely no way.

WarriorsDance · 23/06/2017 10:29

Sounds like the bullshit story by some lad in the paper yesterday who, when contacted, admitted he'd made it up and the pictures he posted were from 2 years ago.

Opentooffers · 23/06/2017 10:29

Been twice in recent years, no way can you just rock up and walk in, and as previous poster said, the fence is massive.! Worry not, someone is fibbing here.

MommaGee · 23/06/2017 10:30

Has he sent you photos?
Also why has he just wandered off for the weekend without consulting with you? Do you have Dc?
