We have 3 cats. Two older boys and a younger female. The female is 18 months. She's a very timid cat so only goes out very rarely and only recently.

At 6 months we took her to the vet and paid for her to be spayed. This was done the "old" way as she had an umbilical hernia that was sorted at the same time.

I noticed over the past couple of weeks she's been putting on weight... you can guess where this is going... we now have 2 boy cats, 1 girl cat and since around 3pm 4 kittens...

They weren't fathered by my boys as they were done as kittens 14 years ago so it must have happened while she was out. I didn't notice any season in her, but she's a very noisy cat and I assume that when she seemed to be getting more adventurous is actually when she was in season.

I've spoken to the vets. They are going to look into their records. They are assuming they only dealt with the hernia, although it does say on their system she was spayed.

AIBU to be wanting them to check over my cat in case she has something going on? I can't move her atm as she's got at least another kitten to come, but I just feel a 'done' cat having kittens needs checked over.

Apparently they'd need to speak to the manager to see if my "no, you need to come out and not be using the phrase call out charge..." is something they can work with.

So, we have 3 surviving kittens. She had 5 (which to me seems a lot as she's a small cat, but they are teeny kittens so who knows).

Kit seems to be doing good. She's well hidden, she's cleaned them etc and they are feeding.

The vet whose practise it is came out to see her as I was worried about how long the last one took (it was stillborn), but typically she delivered it just after he said he'd come!

They've apologised. He said he'll look into what happened. He thinks the hernia maybe distracted them somehow, but he will go through the records and try and work it out.

He said they'd spay her when the kittens are old enough. They'll also check over her and the kittens in a few days, cover the cost of any treatment she needs if it's a botched op rather than missed and they'll flea/worm/vaccinate the three kittens.

He was much more apologetic than the woman I spoke too and understood why I wanted someone out (I didn't know how spaying worked - I had visions of ruptured clips or something).

So we shall see how it goes. I'm still livid but they can't really do more than they are doing.

Once I can get a pic of the kittens without a flash you'll get one :) they are adorable. The children have already started a campaign to DH to be allowed to keep one. I think mentioning that their youngest sister was a surprise and we kept her might have damaged their case though 😂

So glad the vet is being helpful OP, sorry to hear about the other two kittens but at least she's oki

CloudPerson · 23/06/2017 08:13

So pleased the vets are being helpful.
Sorry she lost two Sad

I have a tip for the kitten campaign - campaign to keep all three, that way keeping one won't seem as big a deal!

TSSDNCOP · 23/06/2017 08:24

Well done that vet for being so darned reasonable!

But that means we can concentrate on kitten pics - where are you OP just in case I can pusuade DH to up the fur count here

lalalalyra · 13/09/2017 18:39

I'm sorry I forgot to come back to this - another kitten thread reminded me today.

Sadly our experience went very badly. We lost our girl and 2 more of the kittens.

It wasn't down to the botched op, she just got an infection after the birth.

The vets have been very good, taken full responsibility for everything.

We now have 1 little girl kitten, Raven, who with the help of the vets has been hand reared. She's cute, but very hard work. We are keeping her and we miss her mum very much. The kids were devastated when she died.

Anyway, here is a pic of Raven to thank you all for your advice!

Oh no, poor Kit , what are they vets going to do ? Your cat would be here if they hadn't made the mistake ! I hope you pursue it . I'd be furious with them . Raven is beautiful !!

PollyFlint · 13/09/2017 19:40

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your poor little cat. What a horrible experience for you. Flowers

Raven is absolutely gorgeous and what an incredible job you've done with the hand-rearing.

missymayhemsmum · 13/09/2017 19:48

This happened to a family cat years ago, they only 'found' one ovary and she duly produced a single kitten.
The vet was very apologetic and redid the job for free. YANBU

missymayhemsmum · 13/09/2017 19:50

So sorry, OP, just read the end of your thread. So sad.

BigcatLittlecat · 13/09/2017 20:09

She's such a beauty. But I'm so sorry for the loss of your girl. Made me cry! Sad times tinged with the joy of a kitten.

Maelstrop · 13/09/2017 20:22

Goodness, I'm sorry to hear that your cat and the kittens died :( Raven is beautiful. I hope she heals your heart.

Ratbagcatbag · 13/09/2017 20:35

Oh no. Was reading thinking I'd see a pile of kittens on your poor DH as the kids had won in keeping them all. Not that you'd lose your poor girl in the process. Flowers

SexNamesRFab · 14/09/2017 07:00

Really sorry OP. What a sad update, your poor cat Flowers

CrochetBelle · 14/09/2017 07:27

Oh goodness, what a shocking turn of events. Am glad the vet are taking responsibility and being helpful now.
Bless Mummy Cat and her kittens, and Raven for sticking around to look after you.

Ellendegeneres · 14/09/2017 09:33

Oh god this has brought tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry for your loss. Raven is stunning but how awful to lose her mum due to vets negligence.

What happens next? What are they doing to put this right?? Not that it can be, your beautiful puss can't be brought back I know
