Private number harassment driving me insane

DestinationSofa · 09/06/2017 18:48

For the past 3 weeks a private number has been calling me all day every day. Every time I look at my phone there are missed calls. I have found it impossible to read something on my phone numerous times over the past 3 weeks. Could it be a company that has sold my details ? I have answered about 5 times and there is silence. Starting to feel like I have a stalker now.

Can you try and block it, I can block private numbers on my phone.

Justanothernameonthepage · 09/06/2017 18:58

Have you googled the number? Sometimes it's a scam....

haveacupoftea · 09/06/2017 18:59

It's a withheld number just anothername

SquidgeyMidgey · 09/06/2017 18:59

Is the blowing a whistle thing illegal? Or learn a few words of another language to answer the phone.

CaulkheadUpNorf · 09/06/2017 19:02

I didn't think companies could withhold numbers anymore?

Bobbins43 · 09/06/2017 19:04

That doesn't necessarily sound like a company...

storminabuttercup · 09/06/2017 19:04

Contact your phone provider, they usually have a feature to stop these calls

Northgate · 09/06/2017 19:12

Is there an option to block withheld numbers? I've come across that feature on landlines before, so would it be possible for mobiles too?

AnarchyKitty · 09/06/2017 19:14

I've been getting the same for the last month on my landline.
It's so annoying as I'm applying for jobs so have to answer.
If it's not Boilers, Windows or PPI it's the bloody silent calls.

trolleyknockers · 09/06/2017 19:17

I thought cold callers had to show their numbers. I only answer no caller I.d ones now as these tend to be from people I want to call me , doctors, and therapists etc .

nostringstoholdmedown · 09/06/2017 19:17

I recently left EE and they kept calling me and there would be silence on the other end.

Be careful about ringing numbers back (know you can't as it's private) but I did this and it cost me to call them Hmm

DestinationSofa · 09/06/2017 19:19

Its an iPhone I can't see any option to block numbers. Possibly do not disturb then allow calls from contacts ? Like someone said I need to receive these calls from GP etc !!! I hope it's a computer but very strange if it is ??

I am on EE

Ah sorry, misunderstood private as one that wasn't registered to a company (ie, if a registered company calls, my phone will show their name automatically). If you can't block, see if you can set up a divert

AroseforEmily · 09/06/2017 19:22

Some companies do withold their numbers, I have my phone set so it only rings for numbers in my contacts. I also have an app called truecaller which does a good job of weeding out the spam.

What phone do you have? Maybe someone can help with the settings to block unknown callers.

AroseforEmily · 09/06/2017 19:22

X messages for phone type.

Goldmandra · 09/06/2017 19:30

I can block numbers on my iPhone.

You just click on the little i int he circle next to the number and scroll to the bottom. The last option is Block this caller.

ChocChocPorridge · 09/06/2017 19:33

Could be something as silly as a drinks machine calling for a reload - and it's silent because it's expecting a data signal at the other end - I've had that before, and of course you can't call back either.

You need to find a way to block it - I can tell my handset not to ring for unlisted numbers - can you? As others say, give your provider a call too - see if you can at least completely bounce it rather than send it to answerphone

CaulkheadUpNorf · 09/06/2017 19:33

Not possible to block unknown number on iPhone se or 6 here.

On a iPhone, to block actual numbers, you click the little 'i' next to the number and scroll all the way to the bottom.

Maybe change your voicemail message saying that you've had a lot of spam calls and if they want to speak to you, to leave a message and you'll call them back.

DestinationSofa · 09/06/2017 20:18

Thanks will contact EE

I've changed the setting to do not disturb then silence all calls then allow from contacts seems to be working so far unless they haven't tried again.

Its a dialer system used by a call center .

They work by calling more number than their are staff to take calls,as the chances of everyone answering are slim. So whats happeing to you is that 2 many people answer and you answer last so get a silent line

I think there called drop calls.

Cold calling is being lawed out in 2018 apparently so fingers crossed x
