I think the French voting system makes so much sense. Round 1 all candidates round 2 top two candidates battle head to head, this would allow a majority to pick their preference from the choices, and stop hung parliaments?

Aibu to think this would make so much more sense?!

The French elect a president on this basis, not their MPs.

That is the presidential elections is it not? No members of parliment or PM is voted for like that

I agree that it is a good system for electing their president. They have legislative elections after the presidential elections though.

So they have two sets of elections whenever they vote for a president. First of all, they vote twice in the presidential elections (as it has two rounds). And then they vote in the legislative elections.

Having said that I think it's a good voting system, I think it can become a bit complicated. This is because someone who's elected as president won't necessarily have a parliamentary majority, if an insufficient amount of politicians from their party are elected by voters in the legislative elections.

To clarify, I think the two-round voting system in the French presidential election is good. Because voters have fewer choices to make in the final (second) round of voting, as they only have to choose between two candidates.

There are two rounds in legislatives as well.
