I put cream on the shopping list.

He bought Elmlea and told me, 'It's the only cream they had.'

I pointed out that although it might be in a pot like cream, it was not cream. And the information on the side described it as 'a blend of buttermilk and vegetable oil.'

I'd make him go back and get real cream!!

Now that really is a middle class food disaster! It's taken the best part if 20 years to cure Mr Elbows of the belief that Elmlea or Dream Topping (can you even still buy that?) are just the same as actual cream.

When DH did the exact same thing, I had Abbey hard time persuading him that it WASN'T cream. It looked like cream, it was packaged like cream it was sold next to the cream. He just couldn't quite compute it.

Well that's a whole other AIBU isn't it? Some people would say you're being very unreasonable in using cream in carbonara at all.

On further examination he has also not bought 5 little cartons of the pure orange juice we always get. He has bought 5 cartons of vile sweetened orange squash drink.

While it isn't cream you are being a bit harsh on DH especially if there was no real cream available. Most food is 'meddled with' anyway so unless you grow your own organic food you will always be party to a chemistry experiment.
