AIBU to think that DP owns too many laptops?

DP owns at least 5 laptops, maybe more. They're all second hand and he repairs and upgrades them himself. 2 "belong" to the DSC for long car journeys but why on Earth does he need 3+ more? It's not the cost I'm concerned about but all the bloody clutter. I've never known one household with so many wires!

Just found out it's actually 12 ... Albeit 5 don't work ... But he's going to sell 3 ...

Seems reasonable to me but then I'm married to an IT geek.

Maybe we can just rationalise the number of wires ...

Velcro cable ties can help a little

missing the point

I can sympathise with the wires. We have nothing like that number but I HATE wires around the house

If he is repairing broken laptops then having loads of old broken ones to work on is the best way of learning.

Ditto.

caffeinestream · 07/06/2017 14:40

Maybe he's a bit like me and can't stand chucking anything that looks expensive, no matter how broken/beyond repair it is!

I have 4-5 lying about, plus some tablets and smartphones. They all still work, just not well enough for what I mostly need them for. I've kept them because it's good to have some back-ups, and occasionally it's been helpful to be able to have 3-4 computers doing different things at the same time.

Due to my line of work I can't really donate them without destroying and replacing some things, at which point it's cheaper to just buy new laptops to donate. Otherwise I'd get rid of the clutter a bit faster.

Still, if your DH likes pulling them apart then that doesn't seem like too many to me. My DS likes messing with and fixing computers and I'm pretty sure he'd have something like 30.

Zampa · 07/06/2017 15:01

I am unreasonable ... DP delighted ... I'll never be able to complain again!

Cheers guys! Grin

I have an IT nerd partner as well. At the moment there are 3 large computer screens on his desk/on office wall. He has 3 computers there as well including several hard drives for music and other stuff (many more about the house). He has laptops stashed away everywhere and is using about 4 of them (those are the ones I can see lying about house). There are numerous tablets and phones lying around as well.
Our dining room houses 2 computers and 2 old servers at moment. I constantly walk in to the servers but dp is trying to keep computers to a minimum. Dp works in IT so the equipment is needed.
There are several good things about all the tech though in that there is always spare stuff kicking about if a laptop or tablet breaks. Plus dp built my desktop computer for me and has replaced hard drives and similar for me as needed.

Clutterbugsmum · 07/06/2017 15:44

As some one else married to an IT geek, I have lost count of the amount of computer/laptops and keyboards, I know he has least 10 in the loft.

He also has 1 large box of random cables in the shed, as well as a 4 drawer file cabinet of 'useful' cables Grin.

Zampa · 07/06/2017 15:53

It's nice to know I'm not alone!

Angrypants Hope that the server bruises aren't too bad.

(I haven't even counted the tablets and phones).

Professional geek here. Just been counting mine. I have one current laptop, two old ones. Two PCs, one working one not. All I actually use is the one laptop tbh, out of all 5.

I still think YANBU about the clutter. It's no use having a gazillion power leads if you have to search the whole house for one when you need one. If he repairs stuff, he can damn well organise his shit. It's not on to occupy half the house with clutter - it's like pissing on territory to stop anyone else enjoying it.

littlemissangrypants · 07/06/2017 16:10

Clutterbugsmum Oh the cables and keeping all of them. I thought dp was the only one crazy enought o do that. To be fair he can tell me what every cable is for so I can't complain.
Zampa the servers are leaning against a wall so its mostly small toe related injuries. He keep promising to sell them as both have been replaced but it's been at least 6 months and the servers are still here.
