I'm in the throes of a really bad attack of sciatica. Doctor prescribed naproxen and zopain which haven't helped. Today she has given me diazepam to relax my muscles. I've had a small glass of wine with dinner, just gone to take the first tablet and realised it says no alcohol.
(I know, I should have checked)
AIBU to take it anyway? Will it make me really ill? Thanks in advance for any advice

I've drunk (sometimes a LOT) when I've been on diazepam (and sleeping tablets and ADs). Had no effects on me. Sadly.

Sure you'll be fine with one glass.

Reow · 06/06/2017 20:32

Nah you're fine. Go for it. Wink

Don't have two bottles or anything but a glass or two is fine. You might just feel a bit sleepier.

You don't need to drive a tractor or slice avocados or anything tonight do you?

CheersMedea · 06/06/2017 20:39

The effect will vary person to person and will include things like body weight, how you metabolise alcohol, strength of diazepam. No one here can give you a definitive answer.

That said, if you are talking about one glass of wine, the most it probably will mean is that it will somewhere between slightly or moderately intensify the effect of the diazepam. So make sure you are safe, at home and not needing to drive or operate any kind of dangerous machinery or equipment that cause a danger if you fall asleep (oven turned off, no burning candles etc).

It will probably be fine but as I said you can never be sure.

DawnOfTheMombie · 06/06/2017 20:41

Depends. I've taken 20mg of diazepam for dental surgery and been knocked spark out within 10 minutes of taking it and that's without alcohol.

I have major depressive disorder and have taken quite a wide variety of strong medicine but diazepam knocks me out like nothing else Shock

But I have a friend who regularly drinks whilst taking 50mg and has no effect on her.

MrsJayy · 06/06/2017 20:41

Just take it and go to your bed you should be ok.

MorrisZapp · 06/06/2017 20:42

Ooh my fave combo! Delicious. Enjoy.

GingerWh1nger · 06/06/2017 20:42

I doubt you need to worry about one glass if you have already had it - just don't have any more and be aware you may be much more tipsy than you think. I find it makes me sleep much more heavily if I've had the two together and harder to wake up - so avoid co-sleeping or anything you wouldn't usually do if you had been drinking, including driving, even if you've under the limit. Obviously if you have any underlying conditions (breathing problems etc) maybe call 111 just to get some advice xx

Adelino · 06/06/2017 20:49

As others have said it will be fine. I imagine you're not on a huge dose.
It might make you a bit sleepy and drowsy and is quite a long acting drug so if it your first time taking it see how you feel tomorrow before driving. It will effect different people in different ways so just see how your body reacts to it.

MOIST · 06/06/2017 20:51

Diazepam does nothing for me whatsoever. even doubling the dose washed down with half a bottle of red. I do not advocate this at all as you might get respiratory depression and die. But for me - nothing.

livvymc · 06/06/2017 20:53

Thank you all, I'm going to take it and go to bed. It really was only a small glass and the diazepam are 2mg so I think I should be fine. Thanks again Flowers

Sensible hat on 'should never have alcohol with drugs such as diazepam, sleeping pills, codeine or other strong painkillers'. Combinations like those can kill and no one knows the safe dose for a particular individual........
However, I regularly take combinations of the above and in the past have drunk -a whole bottle of red wine and some spirits- some alcohol and still woken up in the morning.
Not recommended though and I am not known for caring whether I wake up or not.

MorrisZapp · 06/06/2017 20:56

I take 20mg diazepam! You're on a weeny dose.

Decsbetterhalf · 06/06/2017 21:00

Me too. Bucket load of both & I've still woken up.

MAJOR side effect thou...... MEMORY LOSS!

livvymc · 06/06/2017 21:01

morris reading other posts, I realise this now! It was just the big shouty letters on the box that had me worried! Smile

You are not meant to... it can cause problems with your breathing... but I do it a lot and so do loads of people. And 2mg is nothing so I wouldn't worry.

acquiescence · 06/06/2017 21:39

2mg is a tiny dose and probably won't even have any sedating effects. The wine just helps it along. Hope you feel better soon.
