I was just looking at the Tripadvisor reviews for a hotel I will be staying in in Germany later in the year. One of the reviews mentioned getting poor quality housekeeping services in their room one day - because they forgot to leave a tip for the maid.

I have never left a tip for a maid (in the US I might but I have not been there for years). Is this normal? I don't really want to resurrect another of the many "should I tip my hairdresser/whoever" threads, but this really surprised me.

I'm not sure a maid would do a bad job because there was no tip anyway - but it was the idea that you leave them one every day that surprised me.

IF I tip the maid service it would tend to be at the end of the stay, so no chance to impact on their services. However, I generally don't, except in holiday resorts where we've had the same maid for a couple of weeks.

I generally don't. When I was in Vienna though, and ordered room service, they expected a tip. I wondered why they stood at the door smiling at me after giving me my plate, until she said "Tip?" so I added it on to the receipt for her as I don't take cash on work trips.

I think it's expected in some places.

You tip for room service and only for housekeeping at the end of the stay. Not tipping during the stay would not have affected the quality of the housekeeping service.
