To find it vaguely disturbing to have a grown adult lick a plate after a good meal?

I'm not fussy. Really I'm not. I've taken on board the old "Continentals have food, the English have table-manners" thing. Apart from strenous efforts to get DS to eat with his fork not fingers, I have always considered myself fairly laid-back about table manners. But surely an adult should not lick their plate? OK I know it's probably not morally wrong, but surely one should desist, however delicious the meal?

Yuk!
It's certainly not etiquettical!

CarGirl · 18/03/2007 14:02

when I've had belgian chocolate hagen daz I lick the bowl - it's too expensive not to!

If we had company I'd do it in secret tho!

zippitippitoes · 18/03/2007 14:03

I'm an anti plate licker but on a thread on this before the most respectable mners admitted to it..I shall let them come forward again

MrsBadger · 18/03/2007 14:05

Never at the table, never in front of anyone else.

but if a plate needs licking (and sometimes it's waste of DH's gravy not to) I will do it in the kitchen.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 18/03/2007 14:08

Did they pick the plate up and lick it or wipe their finger round the plate and then lick their finger.

Apparantly the second one is perfectly polite. So I now do it and say its what teh Queen does

zippitippitoes · 18/03/2007 14:09

yuk to licking gravy it would be cold

MrsBadger · 18/03/2007 14:10

still tasty when cold!
(doubt it'd work with Bisto)

lionheart · 18/03/2007 14:11

I think, on reflection it is morally wrong. Why would you anyway?

charliecat · 18/03/2007 14:16

I lick a plate if it need licked, like, gravy, with bits of sage n onion in in...yep. But not in front of guests..thankfully we never have any

wotzsaname · 18/03/2007 14:18

yuk....no no

Soapbox · 18/03/2007 14:20

LOL at teh closet plate lickers here

I'm with you Calligula - I'd be aghast if an adult licked their plate in front of me. Actually I think I would probably PSML at them!

EmilyDavidson · 18/03/2007 14:23

Take it as the compliment it so obviously is

DumbledoresGirl · 18/03/2007 14:24

No no no!

That is seriously wrong!

I do scrap a lot with a spoon or fork to get the last of some nice juices or sauce, but lick the plate? In public or private, that is a big no-no!

frenchleave · 18/03/2007 14:25

My (French) BIL used to do this, and he licked yoghurt straight from the pot too

yuk

MoosMa · 18/03/2007 16:35

I'm afraid to admit that I'm a plate and yoghurt pot licker, but certainly not in public, only in my own kitchen (and I try not to let DD see me do it).

I also drink the cereal milk straight from the bowl

foxybrown · 18/03/2007 16:39

I just don't get why people do it. Do they need to lick up the last morsels? It is not attractive and I don't need to see DP licking up the last of the instant oxo, thanks.

Mop it up with some bread by all means.

oxocube · 18/03/2007 16:40

GROSS

crispyduck · 18/03/2007 16:41

ewww yuk...

pointydog · 18/03/2007 16:42

only in front of very very close family members or by self and even then only on rare occasions when meal merits it.

And even then, I'd use finger or bread to lick it all up.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 18/03/2007 16:43

dh does it, only at home, but it makes me puke.

MoosMa · 18/03/2007 18:25

I must point out that the plate only gets licked if it's something really yummy and I just can't bear to waste any of it.

I am a very tidy eater though, I always scrape up all the juice/gravy/crumbs with cutlery or finger. Normally my plate looks like it could go back in the cupboard straight after I've finished with it and I always get the last grain of rice out of the pan. Maybe it's because I was brought up not to waste food and my brain's taken it a bit far...

steinermum · 18/03/2007 18:38

disgusting unless you're alone then it doesn't count

indiajane · 18/03/2007 18:40

My MIL once ate tiramasu with her fingers!! At my table. God, I nearly threw up. I pointed out the spoon / fork but she said she didn't need it.

God.
