To not understand the point of 'snacking'

I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have never aten between or after meals. The reason for this is because I wasn't brought up with it.

I'm not hungry inbetween meals but then I do have decent sized portions for each meal.

I'd never be someone to sit down after evening meal with a packet of crisps.

Is this really unusual? when I go to my friends houses they seem to be constantly eating.

Good for you.

YoloSwaggins · 31/05/2017 17:00

I think snacking has become part of our culture what with "Graze" boxes, snacking time in childrens activities, cake in the office, etc.

I usually snack at 4ish because 7 hours is a long time between lunch and dinner. I don't like to feel "stuffed" after meals so I'll be hungry about 4 hours after one.

Phillipaaa · 31/05/2017 17:01

I don't have an issue with it. People can eat what they like. I'm just curious really.

I'd not see the need to eat in between meals. I have my dinner at 5:30pm though.

There isn't a point. But people do it. Maybe it's more complex than just hunger eh?

ChildishGambino · 31/05/2017 17:01

I agree - I find it weird when it's not a meal time and people go, "do you want some nuts?" Or a "little sandwich?" Erm...no thanks!

PrinceAli · 31/05/2017 17:02

to not understand the point of 'snacking'

Well what it is, is that some people are hungry in between meals. So then they eat.

YoloSwaggins · 31/05/2017 17:04

I have my dinner at 5:30pm though

5:30?!? Well, there's your answer.

I have dinner at 8-8:30, hence can't last that long without snacking...

Crabbo · 31/05/2017 17:05

I eat 3 big meals (as in the portion size is often too big for guests) and then I snack a few times in between as well. My bmi is 18 so it's obviously not too much for me - people have different appetites and metabolisms, what's the problem?

PurpleDaisies · 31/05/2017 17:05

Isn't it obvious? Confused

I'm not sure what there is to "get" really. Either people or hungry or they just fancy eating something.

SusannahL · 31/05/2017 17:06

I have noticed this too op.

No wonder there is such a massive obesity problem in this country.

blackteasplease · 31/05/2017 17:07

People have different metabolisms though and their digestive systems are different.

Many need to eat little and often especially if they are slimmer.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 31/05/2017 17:08

BECAUSE FOOD IS TASTY

5.30pm though, early for dinner. I have dinner 2-3 hours after that, so get hungry and need a snack. That's pretty much it.

PurpleDaisies · 31/05/2017 17:08

No wonder there is such a massive obesity problem in this country.

That depends entirely on what the snacks are.

I can't see how eating the same banana with my breakfast rather than at morning break will make me thinner.

Snap8TheCat · 31/05/2017 17:08

Do you never eat outside of your mealtimes?

ShinyGirl · 31/05/2017 17:09

Well done you.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 31/05/2017 17:09

SusannahL LOL, because someone snacks does not make them obese. I have a morning and afternoon snack and I am small.

reallybadidea · 31/05/2017 17:10

I don't get why some people eat their evening meal at 5.30. It would feel totally alien to me to sit down for a big dinner at what is for me, the middle of the afternoon. Plus the fact that I'd be at work!

Fiona1984 · 31/05/2017 17:11

I have a fast metabolism, and get ridiculously hungry between meals. I can't eat a lot at once either.
My BMI is around 19 or 20.

DotForShort · 31/05/2017 17:11

I do think the snacking culture has got a bit out of control. At children's activities, a snack seems to be included no matter the time of day or length of the activity. I've never been in the habit of regularly snacking (though I do occasionally) and I don't eat at all after the evening meal. OTOH, my husband can't get through an evening without pretzels or something similar.

EsAreGood · 31/05/2017 17:11

I've noticed this too, OP.

Plus, the word "snack" or "snacking" really sets my teeth on edge.

It makes me think of a spoiled snotty nosed kid called Joshua or Sebastian who can't possibly be expected to last a full two or three hours between meals so must have a snack of something organic and terribly healthy.

SusannahL · 31/05/2017 17:12

Well it would be fine if it was just a banana but they are usually chomping on burgers or some other fattening food.

showmeislands · 31/05/2017 17:13

What's not to get? People eat out of hunger or for enjoyment. I don't eat big meals as I don't like to feel stuffed, so tend to eat smaller things 5-6 times a day, little and often. You could call it snacking. No obesity issue here, I've always been slim. It's whatever you prefer!

PurpleDaisies · 31/05/2017 17:13

Well it would be fine if it was just a banana but they are usually chomping on burgers or some other fattening food.

Hmm

That's not normal snacking for anyone I know.

Nancy91 · 31/05/2017 17:15

I've noticed this too, I think it's a boredom thing. Eating for something to do.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 31/05/2017 17:15

Well it would be fine if it was just a banana but they are usually chomping on burgers or some other fattening food.

Who are you actually talking about? Who is they?
