To ask about feeling pre menstral on the pill

Just that really. I've recently gone back on the combined pill after finishing breastfeeding. I'm noticing at the end of the pill packet (last few pills)that I'm feeling pre menstral- like you do when either your period is about to start or you're pregnant.

Is this possible given that the pill stops your cycles?

I took the pill before kids and never remember this happening. I actually felt pregnant last month towards the end of the packet and did several tests!

I just need to know if this sounds common as I don't want to be worrying every month that I feel pregnant!

I always knew when I was coming towards the end of my pack without checking, I was an absolute nightmare. Tears, cramps, shouting, cravings, you name it. I never actually did have PMS before I went on the pill and haven't since I came off it. So in my experience, it's normal. You might find you'd do better on a different brand of the combined pill, but I'd give it a few months to settle down if you've only recently started using it.

Absolutely. It's a few years back now, but I had to stop taking Cilest after DD3 was born. I was on it for a few months during which I became a raging, tearful, near hysterical wreck. I once threatened to fucking punch my fucking DH's fucking head through the fucking wall over something utterly trivial and forgotten now. You get the jist. I switched to barrier methods and was fine. PMT that extreme was never normal for me, so I knew it was the Pill. Oddly enough I had taken Cilest for a couple of years before I had DD1 with no problem. I don't know if they changed the formulation, but it affected me terribly after DD3.

If the effects of your Pill are intolerable to you, I'd discuss other brands of contraceptive methods with your GP.

Yeah thanks all. It's not intolerable- I just don't remember it from before (havent taken the pill for 4 years). Maybe it's because I'm an old codger now or something and my body doesn't like the hormones!

When I found the right pill (Mercilon for me), it was brilliant as I never experienced PMT symptoms at all. With some others I did, and Microgynon made me feel like I had PMT every single day! Shame the Mercilon didn't actually work as a contraceptive, because otherwise it was fab (clear skin, no mood swings, lost weight).

It may be that this pill is no longer the best for you.

But really, the pill increases the amount of progesterone and estrogen in your body, which inhibits the ripening of eggs and the thickening and sloughing of your uterine lining, and reduces or stops the natural hormone rhythms. However for some people, on some pills it doesn't completely stop the production of natural hormones and so you still get the ups and downs associated with a 'natural' cycle, the eggs just don't ripen/ the uterus isn't implantable.

I get horrific pms from birth control. I've tried so many different pills and nova ring. I felt psychotic.
I'm now post baby and trying to decide what to try next but terrified.
Considering merina coil but have read some terrible reviews.
Mainly just avoiding sex

winner I tried the coil already. The gp talked me into it. It perforated my uterus and I had to have keyhole surgery to get it removed...
