How often do you buy new sheets?

I tend to buy expensive ones as mum used to say it was false economy to get cheap ones. So mine last ages and ages, 10 years plus.

However, my friend disagrees and says you should replace sheets at least every 2 years, regardless of quality, as it's unhygienic to keep them any longer.

What do you think?

Whenever i see them..
I quite often buy second hand, my local charity shop sells duvet sets with pillow cases for £1, so i have lots of spares.

I have around 14 sets in my linen cupboard, 4 beds in the house.

hygiene issues?
with modern washing mashines and detergent? the occassional hot wash?
really?

corythatwas · 25/05/2017 08:29

I take it your friend doesn't worry at all about the landfill.

hibbledobble · 25/05/2017 08:36

I have primark sheets and they have lasted really well.

Expensive ones are made of the same stuff.

Are you sure she didn't mean the duvet itself? I can get the summer quilts in the washer, but not the high tog ones (all king size). In which case, I would agree, and I buy the cheap supermarket ones for that reason. But for the bedding itself, no way. My sets are over ten years old and still going strong, washed at 60 degrees and line dried if at all possible.

HappydaysArehere · 25/05/2017 08:47

Perhaps your friend doesn't use a hot wash. They need to be washed on 60 at least.

Some of my sheets are 10 years old but they are back up ones. I keep sheets until they get bobbly or feel worn out.

BarbarianMum · 25/05/2017 08:54

About every 10 years. But i do buy high quality cotton to start with.

caffeinestream · 25/05/2017 08:55

Whenever I see a new set I like and feel like buying more - so maybe every 3-4 years but I don't chuck the old sets out unless they've been too badly shredded by the cats to be of much use.

I really want to buy new bedding now though.....

zukiecat · 25/05/2017 09:24

I just buy Primark ones, and have only bought one or two sets in 14 years

The DC and me have one set of bedding each, and the Primark ones wash well and last ages
