Hi, I'm due to pick up a car I've bought on finance from a dealership later on today, however I've just looked online and it says that the car isn't taxed, so I've tried to taxed it myself but it says I need the number from a letter that I should've gotten through the post.

I haven't got anything through the post. Does anyone know what I can do? Can I still bring it home today?

I'm only 18 and this is my first car so I'm not 100% sure on the understanding on stuff like this.

Thanks Smile

Phone the dealer, it is normal for cars to be taxed for 6 months

BlueNeighbourhood · 20/05/2017 11:25

You will get a copy of the V5 from the dealer which will have a part torn off which has your details on. The other part has a number on it which you can use to tax the car online.

BlueNeighbourhood · 20/05/2017 11:25

Ps. Cars don't get taxed now. Any new owner must tax their car as it cannot be transferred from a dealer or anywhere else.

Can you not phone the dvla up for advice ,your car needs an up-to-date Mot, certificate and proof of insurance( I think) think you also might need log book to prove ownership, you can tax it at the post office, you can also pay monthly on a direct debit.

coursedarlin · 20/05/2017 11:29

I got a car on finance last week. They went through the tax information online while we were there. We had to choose whether to tax for the year or 6 months or monthly direct debit. It's worth taking your bank details with you if you don't know them to be able to set that up

startingtheengine · 20/05/2017 11:31

It doesn't instantly show on the DVLA website when you tax a car online. If you are picking it up from a dealership they will most likely have either taxed it yesterday or will do it whilst you are there today. When they do tax it they should print the confirmation screen to show you it has been done. Enjoy your new wheels 🚗

& once you have the V5 no you can do it all online on your phone at the delaers

SantanicoPandemonium · 20/05/2017 11:44

The last time I bought a car (since the new rules came in) I taxed it at the dealers - they did it online for me while we were doing the paperwork.

DoItTooJulia · 20/05/2017 11:48

YY. Taxed on line in dealers office.

Happy driving!

The dealer doesn't tax the car because it has to be in the new owners name. You will need the new keepers document reference number. Which you can get when you pick the car up or you could ring the dealers and get the number and tax the car online. The dealers should get you to fill in the V5 registration document and then sign it, then they should send it to the DVLA for you and you will get a new document in your name in 4 - 6 weeks. If they give you the V5 registration document make sure you send it to the DVLA. Have you got your insurance arranged? You have to do this to be able to tax the car and also before you pick the car up.

Dealer will be used to dealing with this on every car they sell. Its really easy, takes a few minutes online.
Take a credit or debit card to pay online. It doesn't matter if the car is not in your name yet, you only need the serial number off the registration document.

PeaFaceMcgee · 20/05/2017 12:09

If you want to do it ahead of your appointment to collect the car, ring the dealer for the code you need, which will be on the V5 document in their possession. Don't forget insurance too before you drive away :)

JustGandering36 · 20/05/2017 12:33

When I brought my car last month the dealership taxed it online for me. They just had a few of my details and then added the £30 road tax to the overall price of the car. I then paid in full on the day I picked up the car but it tpoker a couple days for the status of the car being taxed to shown up online.

Thanks everyone! All done and new car is sat on the drive now! Thanks again x
