AIBU?

To laugh at the idea that Emma Watson is a phenomenal actress

She received the best actor award at the MTV awards last night for the first ever "non-gender" acting award as they did away with separate male and female categories.

AIBU to feel that people who think Emma Watson's performance in Beauty and the Beast was the best movie acting in any film in the last 12 months are somewhat misguided?

Like Edmund I've also hear rumours of diva like behaviour. Not well liked at all by cast and crew on B&tB. Allegedly.

Hah, did you hear the link on good morning breakfast to Lorraine this morning when she said to piers Morgan 'you're just annoyed that it's been won by someone who's y'know quite annoying' - and then clearly remembered where she was and that she's not supposed to air her actual opinions!

No - I don't care that she got best actress, because the awards aren't important :)

She's pretty, clever and nice. Not a good actress no. But Disney is hardly Shakespeare.

YANBU. My cat has more charisma than Emma Watson- and she sleeps for 25 hours a day.

She was terribly miscast in B&tB. I personally thought she would've done very well for herself in settling for the provincial life with Luke Evans.

I think she's brilliant. Love that she's into feminism and ethical clothing.
I'm afraid I think she's a terrible actress. I loved B and the B but she was utterly wrong for it. She just can't act. Her singing was the best bit if her role. She was painfully wooden.

I think Carey Mulligan had a baby but I love her too

Actually, they are. Actors who win awards get more roles, so you have more of a chance their horrible wooden/unchanged acting will turn up in more films you may want to watch.

Yanbu. DP commented that there was an irony in watching her in B and B where she is supposedly talking to inanimate objects which have come alive when every time she came on screen it was like someone had thrown a chair into the room...

Carey Mulligan on the other hand is phenomenal. She was heart breaking in Never Let Me Go.

She wasnt great in Harry potter, but a lot of the child acting in that wasnt fabulous really. She did a good impersonation of how i imagined Hermoine to be however!
I havent seen her in anything else so cant comment on the awards, but I suppose she is a name now and will get the parts regardless ( cynical view, but there you go)

I am more laughing at the concept of a "non-gender" award. Wait a few years and see how "non-gender" it is and the uproar if only female win it...

She may or may not be a nice person, her acting may or may not be the best this year (certainly not better than Hugh Jackman!) I did admire her for taking time off to go to uni. But her 'speech' about 'genderless awards' would have been more believable if she hadnt been reading the autocue! Thats pretty naff.

But it is MTV and they are trying hard to be taken seriously by getting into the whole 'gender' thing. Might be easier if they didnt have such ridiculous award 'buckets'.

She's likeable enough but I agree she's not a convincing actress. She's okay ish but agree she's a bit wooden and it feels like watching Emma Watson try and be someone else rather than believing she is the actual character. That said she was better in B&B than I had expected, although my expectations were not high.

Carey Mulligan on the other hand is super talented. Now that's an actress. Completely believable in everything I've seen her in. Speaking of Never Let Me Go, she acted Keira Knightly off the screen in that. She's another wooden unbelievable actress who seems to have the same facial expression no matter what the character is.

I can't stand her, she's a terrible actress and one of those virtue-signalling celebrities that jumped on the feminism bandwagon but have no concept of real life.

I know someone who went to schoool with her. Apparently she was a diva there too

I have nothing against her at all but she isn't a stand out actor to me. She has no onscreen presence or particular charm. Also I do hate it when actors get on their smug soapboxes to lecture to the rest of us on whatever cause of the day.

I liked her speech. Good for her if she won it. She doesn't come across as a diva.

I was just saying to DH the other day that she is a perfectly lovely seeming girl who uses influence for good and is v nice and pretty etc...

BUT, come on, she has totally somehow been born under a lucky star professionally! Like I say she is vv pretty but I have lost count of the number of mag covers I've drifted past where she is lauded as 'the generation's beauty' bla, bla - er, really? Why do the film/media establishment lurve her so? Not to mention she is phenomenally rich because of the nature of HP (in it for one, in it for seven), has access to top stylists and MUA etc, clearly had amazing agent and publicist, and at the end of the day really can't act THAT well. I mean, more power to her elbow, but it has all gone extraordinarily well for her considering.

Agree with pp that Carey Mulligan is just amazing.

Surprised Emma Watson won this award, loved B & B, dd's loved it thought Emma Watson was so beautiful & loved the costumes, however Gaston stole the show, he was great.

I think Emma Watson herself is a bit of a spoilt rich kid & is quite stage schooly... However she is a good role model who took time off to complete her education & she is never caught in any scandals (apart from diva rumours!!)
