Just got this from school, and I just don't feel like it's a good idea, given that Flickr's been subject to hacks in the past. I wouldn't mind if it was on the school's on server, but uploading pictures to an American-owned social media site, even if they are marked as private, doesn't feel right to me. AIBU?

"Following up on your requests to share more pictures of the schoolchildren, we have opened a private group at Flickr, where we will upload pictures. Parents will also be able to share their pictures taken in and outside school, like birthday celebrations and excursions. To gain access to our private group, you will need to create an account on Flickr..."

Are these naked pictures of children in strangely sexually provocative poses?

I assume they're not and therefore you're fretting about nothing. Why do you think a school's server would be more secure than a huge international company which'll likely have huge budgets for security.

There may be some children wh'os images shouldn't be uploaded but this is an entirely different subject and I hope the school deals with that appropriately. Any parents who don't wish photos from something like an outside school party would need to make their wishes known anyway.

I think it's a good idea. My school has a blog per class with lots of images and parents can send photos of events to be uploaded and included. I don't know if we'd include a birthday party but other things like a sporting event not attached to the school have been included in the past.
