To think dh is blaming ds8 for his own carelessness

Dh has a reputation for being incredibly careless with stuff. We live in the country and have a biggish garden which is bound by hedges but not walls or fences and runs along a quiet country road. Dh left a garden tool at the end of the garden (closer to the road than the house) two weeks ago and is amazed to discover it has been stolen when he went to use it this evening. He has told ds who is 8 and very earnest, that he had brought it in when he was told to it wouldn't have been stolen. There is no evidence that ds was told to bring it in but either way he is crushed that he has caused his dad this distress. Dh says I'm not blaming him I'm just saying if he'd brought it in.....but AIBU to think he absolutely is passing the buck here and my crossness with him is justified????

What do you mean 'no evidence'? What were you hoping for, CCTV or a wire? Do you believe your DH or not? If he told DS to bring it in and he could have done but didn't, then he has a point.

Mm my ds 8 usually needs chased up on anything he is asked to do so I wouldn't have assumed he had brought it in!!
If it was expensive /important /dangerous then dh should have checked it was locked away.

Was DS using the tool or DH?
