Inspired by the new series on BBC2 where 'Charles' goes full King John on Parliament, I was thinking I would prefer the royal family to make law and policy autonomously as they have no ambition and are already privileged. I know it sounds crazy but I feel most politicians are self serving and greasy ladder climbing using their time as an MP as a steppingstone to more profitable things (George Osborne - I'm looking at you) whereas the royals have a more filial responsibility. Just a thought - what do you think?

I think you're ideas are beyond batshit crazy... I've heard some bizarre stuff but never that we should become an absolute monarchy when Charles become king.

Just thought it was an interesting idea! There seems to be no social responsibility in modern politicians, they work on a short term, 4 year cycle lurching from election to election. They only do what will get them short term votes - would a longer term leader not be a more stable option?

Woa! It's not going to happen! calm down all! Everyone is unhappy with current government mainly because they are so self serving and short sighted - ok, no absolute monarchy. What other alternatives do people suggest? It's ok, there's not going to be a legally binding countrywide vote on it or anything .

current government is self serving and short sjghted, i don't remember labour doing any better under blair's 'so called new labour'except spending money the country didn't have and land in us in shit loads of debt, how do those bills get repaid if cut backs aren't made now ?

Well, we could let the people decide who they want to represent them in free and fair elections.... such as what we're about to have in a month!

We are being ruled by tyrants but looking to the Royals to step in (for us commoners) will be out of the frying pan into the fire.

Isn't an un elected long term leader a dictator? Hard to get shot of when they go power crazy. They could dictate we all have to wear a waste paper bin on our heads on a Wednesday with one arm tied behind our backs.

Well, the Queen or indeed Charles, when he gets his turn, could dissolve Parliament, it is always an option theoretically speaking.

It will never happen though, there would be absolute uproar in the streets if we reverted back to having an absolute monarchy after hundreds and hundreds of years of not having one.

For a while I've thought that they system of a 4 year cycle isn't very good because nothing really long term gets done if it will mean short term pain because the opposition will campaign that they won't do it so no short term pain or they'll just undo it.
