To leave the sodding curtains closed?

Nobody in this house opens or closes curtains.

We don't have many as we live in the middle of a field and are not overlooked but in the kitchen diner we have floor length curtains at the French doors. There is a busy road towards the front of the house and if we have the kitchen light on you can see in, albeit very briefly as you drive past.

Yesterday I was ill. This morning I have come down to all of last nights dinner left overs still on the table, dishes everywhere, curtains closed ( 9.30am).

I feel like just leaving them closed all day to see who would bother/notice and open them eventually.

Dh is here, as are dc's 13, 12, 10 and 6

It would be an interesting experiment, but closed curtains are so depressing in daylight - in your place I'd probably crack after fifteen minutes of gloom and open them anyway.

I have the same issue - it appears only females have curtain opening ability!

In you situation I would ask "why are the curtains still closed and the dinner not cleaned up?" In as reasonable a tone as I could manage. Start with the adult who really should know better.

To be entirely fair to your kids, they may not have noticed what makes the house keep ticking over. It was certainly a shock to me when I moved out!

They don't care. You care. If you want the curtains opened or closed then you need to do it yourself.

YANBU. DH doesn't ever draw curtains at night and it's a bit annoying.

What is with leaving the leftovers and dirty dishes, though? That's worse. Did they leave them for you to clear up?

I try with the curtains but do crack after ten minutes. I had a moan at dh but I say the same thing day after day. It's depressing. The rubbish is the same, he doesn't notice that needs taking out either.

I agree about dc.

Yes dishes were left for me as I didn't feel well last night so left them and despite dh being up a good 2 hours earlier than me they were still there and would still be there if I hadn't cleaned up Angry

I spent a small fortune on having curtains made to measure and professionally fitted when I moved in. Mindful of "training" them when first hung, I kept them open on purpose.

That was 16 years ago, and reading this thread made me realise that I've never actually closed them! But I do live in a private area, and have very good voiles that ensure privacy.

I have this. My husband would keep the blind down in the bedroom forever. I also as an experiment will leave crap out to see if he puts it away. Right now he has a clean pair of socks neatly rolled up sitting at the end of the bed which have been there for approx a month. He will walk past bags of rubbish and leave them waiting to go out, unless I say, take that bag with you. I honestly think his brain doesn't register them, Confused

Our curtains are shut 99% of the time here Blush but the dirty plates isnt good, I'd be asking him when hes planning on doing them!

They should have tidied up the dinner things.

But there's no need to open the curtains before 9.30am. Have people even been in the kitchen to need the light?

Forget the curtains, I would be going nuclear at the thoughtless selfish bunch leaving their mess for the skivvy to clean up.

Too late now as you have done it, but I would not be cooking them a meal tonight. Why the hell should you do anything for them when they do nothing for you?

The curtains are a matter of preference, but the leaving dirty dishes is just bloody minging, thoughtless and selfish of them. I hope you didn't clean up!

Just seen you did clean up! Why!? I'd have dumped them in the middle of the work top till kingdom and carried on with life come rather than washed up the mess like a good wife.

What a lazy selfish bunch you live with OP.
You were unwell and they couldn't be bothered cleaning their own mess.
You need to change what you do for them.
DH is pretty useless re housework but there is no way he wouldn't clear up the plates/sink etc if I was unwell.

Some people like having the curtains closed until at least mid morning. It's not necessarily laziness - maybe they just prefer it. It takes 2 seconds to open a pair of curtains, so if you prefer them open go for it.

The curtains wouldn't bother me, I wouldn't even notice that as mine are closed 100% of the time, and have been for years

I am uncomfortable with open curtains in my house

My 4 year old opened our living room curtains yesterday! (I had to tidy them up) but he was the first person into the room so he did them!

We didn't like the view/aera at the last house so the curtains were only opened under duress. We've since moved and love throwing the curtain and windows open.
We are no longer self exiled urban hermits.

My curtains are never open really, maybe once a month if I'm doing a big clean or it's particularly sunny. Otherwise we work full time and tend to be out of the house a lot at weekends so never bother, plus the kitchen and living room are ground level and have a path running in front of them, it's not very private.

Also like to walk around naked a lot.

Yes I'm afraid I did that rage cleaning of the kitchen after almost yanking the bloody curtains off their poles.

I know I shouldn't have but I just wanted to sit down and wake up with a cup of coffee and couldn't face looking at it all.

We walk through the kitchen to get through the sitting room so everyone had walked past them. They know how I feel about it now Grin. To be fair, dh normally leaves the house at 6 and I pull them when I get up on school days. If he's ever working from home and any other times they get ignored until I do them, he simply does not notice them.

He's pretty crap at noticing what needs doing around the house, if I ask him to do something specific, i.e. Can you put the rubbish out ( and hand it to him) he'll do it but wouldn't dream of putting the Hoover around or loading the dishwasher.
