To wonder about the Daily Mail thing?

Every so often on here I see comments like 'this'll end up in the Daily Fail!' or instances where someone mentions the thread has actually appeared there.

Now, since I'm not going to go on their website and check this cos fuck 'em, they're not having my clicks, I was wondering if someone in the know could tell me what this is all about? Do they run a regular 'random shit I read on mumsnet' column? Do they structure entire articles around something an anonymous poster put on a chat forum? I know their standards for 'journalism' are not exactly high, but do they seriously do this?

Yes, several times a week.

No, they just publish a thread every now and then on their online publication.

It's not a big deal imo and it's not like it's front page of their paper edition.

A few TV shows discuss threads from here too, like This Morning and The Wright Stuff. I think a couple of radio shows too.

The Mirror do exactly the same with MN threads.

Journalism in the tabloids seems to be pinching threads off social media and reporting on them as though they are news.

I HATE it when they show a picture of the tweet, then underneath, repeat word for word, what the tweet said.

Shouldn't be able to call themselves journalists.

Don't know how often they do this, but yes, they have structured entire articles around mumsnet threads.

Mind you they probably think it's fair enough, considering that a huge proportion of MNetters read the Daily Mail.

Pretty52, some kind of blog type website I think, posted a baby name one off MN the other day but it was odd cause I'm sure it was weeks after the original thread was posted.

Pretty much. Whenever they can't think of anything interesting or they can't be bothered to do any journalism someone will just lift a thread off here verbatim and print it.
Sometimes they will do it with threads that are very personal, things like someone's child dying. Scummy fuckers.

Donald - the reason they caption the tweet is in case the image of the tweet doesn't load correctly (for instance on a device set up for someone with visual impairments). This way, they can still follow the story.

So you may HATE it, but for others it is crucial.

Also DMOL has a text only version for faster loading at slower connections, hence the captioning of images of FB, Twitter etc posts, as mentioned above.
