Why Standby instead of good old fashioned OFF?

Has annoyed me for a while that our "new" TV only goes onto standby instead of OFF unless you use the switch on the wall (which I need to be a contortionist to reach)

Today I have bought a new kettle, unwrapped it, filled it....bloody thing doesnt go OFF -unless you use the wall switch it sits in the corner of the kitchen like some neon blue illumination.

Arent we meant to be trying to be switching things off MORE....not LESS.

HELL I would take it back but its quite a drive to get back to the shop - I might have to do a Mrs Angry letter to Russell Hobbs.

Ditto our new telly and kettle and stereo. We switch all the buggers off at the wall.

I will do that with the kettle, but I really cant get to the TV one, it just annoys me I think the manufacturers should be more responsible - I guess its one less switch they have to install though so why should they care!

We bought a new TV about 18mths ago and I searched for the off switch for ages. There isn't one and the socket is down behind some wall units so it's totally impractical to move everything twice a day to switch on/off. It's v annoying.

Standby buttons should be banned.

Environmentally crap and a fire hazard.
