to report this dog?

My daughter (9) was bitten by a local dog a few nights ago. She was standing near the dog's garden gate talking to its owner and it put its head through the gate and bit her leg (she had ignored the dog because it barks a lot whenever we walk or drive past - it's a collie). Luckily she had jeans on, but it still broke the skin so she's on antibiotics to prevent infection. The owners have promised to put wire across the gate to stop the dog getting its head through (we have lots of children on our road). They've done nothing yet, but I'm guessing they will do it at the weekend - hopefully.
Do I report this bite to someone? The police? I want it to be logged in case it happens again, but I don't want to have the dog put down. But if it happened again to someone else's child and was a worse bite, I would feel awful.

I'd probably give them until Monday to sort the gate out. I assume the dog doesn't get out of the garden.

If they don't fix the gate I would report it. I'm not sure if it's the council or the police?

I have seen it occasionally roaming around the street, but it always looks much happier and calmer and basically ignores all humans when it's out. When it's behind the gate it spins round and round and barks at every tiny thing, a car going past, people walking past, etc. Really irritating.
If I see it out on the street again I will be contacting the owner. I've warned all the parents on our road that it has bitten my daughter. If the wire isn't on the gate by next week I will have to nag them. So glad it wasn't a much worse bite!

Report to the council dog warden. It shouldn't be roaming the streets either.

Rang the warden - they have logged it but she said I had to call the police for any further action. Not keen to do this.
They haven't put any wire across the gate, but there is some wire fencing leaning up against the gate which implies to me that they have started. The dog is still there barking at all and sundry.
If I see the dog out of its garden then I will call the police though, definitely!

What did the Dr say about the severity of the bite?
