AIBU to ask for an emergency GP appointment tomorrow

My GP's practice has a three week wait for a routine GP appointment but you can telephone to ask to see a doctor the same day but you have to say that what you have will get worse if you do not see a doctor that day.

My left breast is swollen to twice it's size (I am not beast feeding), is exceptionally painful, and my lymph nodes in my left armpit are swollen and tender and I have a lump in my arm.

Daft question - is this urgent or should I just wait for a routine doctor's appointment on the 12th April?

Yes I would ask for same day with those symptoms.

I wouldn't wait, because it might be an infection, in which case you'll need anti biotics.

That seems urgent to me! Is it hot to the touch as well? Any flu like symptoms? I think you can get mastitis even when not BF. Maybe even call 111 for an out of hours appointment today. They can at least help you decide how urgent it is.

I think perhaps you should call 111 too.

Do you have a fever? If so, I'd be at a walk in or A&E. No fever is get seen tomorrow at the latest. Much luck.

Thank you all for your responses - I didn't want to be seen to be a making fuss over nothing. I telephoned 111 and in my area we do not have walk-in clinics (the only option was A&E) and they have a five hour waiting time at the moment. Lovely lady advised that I should telephone GP first thing in the morning but if get high fever tonight go A&E.

Hospital now! My mates did that when she had an infection in the nipple of all places, however it could be more serious, in the nicest way go to the bloody hospital! Good luck OP x

Dr here- from your description I would say you need to call NHS24- I would not go to A&E (unless you are unwell and need to be seen now). I think you need seen today, but probably not an emergency in an A&E sense. I would not wait until tomorrow to see your GP, given your description.

GP at out of hours can see you and decide whether you can be treated or whether an admission is required.

In my area, out of hours GPs work in various clinics, so you phone NHS 111 and they give you an appt. Is this not available in your area? Could you at least speak to a GP? If not, first thing tomorrow, please insist that you are seen. Best of luck!

I've had mastitis a few times (I am breastfeeding) it's always just come on suddenly with a high temp and flu like symptoms.
I know it might not be that but I would of thought an infection would have the same sort of symptoms as that's what mastitis is.
Each time was always in the eve (typ) so had to go to ooh.
Have always been told to get it looked at straight away as can turn pretty nasty.
If you don't have any other symptoms (temp,shakes,aches) then you should be ok to wait until the morning.
But if you get any of them symptoms you need to be seen asap.

Go to a&e and insist that they do tests. It is probably benign but you don't want to take any risks.

It worries me that we have such different systems in place across the country. Some areas have A and E, minor injuries treatment centres, walk in centres, out of hours GPs as well as the usual surgery. Others, usually rural, seem to have just GP and A and E. Presumably they wait longer for attention when it falls below the A and E threshold.

I had the same a few years ago it was a breast abscess and it put me in hospital as I developed sepsis. So yes. It's urgent!
