I totally agree too. It's awful, a horrible situation, but it is being blown massively out of proportion, and the bastards will be loving it.

It is correct, but we have been on high alert for so long that the first attack - and sorry but I believe it is only the first attack - is bound to get huge coverage.

We were waiting for it, it's happened, of course it's going to be huge. Especially as he got close to parliament and the ruling elite.

You could argue that Lee Rigby was only one life lost. Why bother with all the media coverage when people are stabbed to death on the streets of London every day?

No, not at all. It's part of a series of events which have worldwide global relevance and are interlinked. Of course we shouldn't pretend it's just like any other RTA or stabbing.

What the Guardian are basically saying is that these events don't fit in with their narrative for the world so they want them hushed up, played down and censored. I don't want to end up like Germany where nobody believes that it's a coincidence that a series of Muslim men with mental health issues have decided to go on violent rampages with no link at all. Or that hundreds of women haven't been sexually assaulted because it's inconvenient for politicians.

We have a right to know what's going on in our country and the impact our global activities have on what happens here.

Incidentally I don't remember them dismissing Jo Cox's murder as just another stabbing with the motives irrelevant. Wonder why that is?

I agree. I'm not one for public grieving. It's making me feel awkward a bit like when Diana died. I also don't understand why my friends are speaking on behalf of me and other Londoners/Brits on Facebook saying we will carry on etc. It's becoming a public display of how eloquently and right on you can be with each terror attack. I care but I don't think it's wrong to care in private is it? I'll let the queen and PM May speak on my behalf if thats okX

I don't like public grieving either. But that article doesn't appear to be calling for an end to public grieving. It's asking for suppression of events.

I think there are two separate issues.

I don't think the severity of the situation has been overstated but I'm also not one for public outpourings of grief. I have spoken to my friends and colleagues about what happened but I'm not on Facebook, twitter etc so I don't have to see all the hashtags and one upmanship that I think can be very false.

BillSykes of course we need to know what's happened. I don't think the article is disputing this.

Yes, I read this and thought he made a vaid point. We don't even know for certain that it wasnt just some random nutter who couldn't even get hold of a gun.

I hardly ever agree with Guardian article, but in this case I agree thoroughly.

I also think that when incidents like this get such a high level of coverage it puts ideas into another maniac's head, as with suicides.

Some of the media had double standards this week, given that some outlets hardly mentioned Martin McGuinness, presumably in respect of IRA victims' families (one paper I saw had one sentence about him on page 23) yet have had full on printed spreads or blanket tv coverage about the individual responsible for what happened on Wednesday

Also can't believe I found myself agreeing with Michael Portillo on This Week last night over some remark he made concerning 9/11. Can't remember his exact words but it was along the line of NYC losing 3000 people in one day so we shouldn't take on an air of superiority over our resilience

I agree with the media I wish it hadn't been reported but it has to be, also we have to increase security.
The biggest problem is - successful attacks then spur others on who may not have had guts too.
