To be a total anxious wreck everytime my son coughs

My little boy is 8 months old and has been admitted to hospital 3 times for bronchiolitis since he was 6 weeks old. Last time he was admitted it was the most severe he's had it and he was on oxygen and a nasal feeding tube for 2 days. Now he's jist started coughing and I could cry at the thought of another hospital stint I'm feeling really emotional and anxious.
I know it's normal to worry about your children but I could literally sit and cry at the minute what is wrong with me what can I do

Oh OP it's very stressful when your baby is sick but yours is only 8 months old so you've barely had time to adjust as well.

If you're worried, don't think twice about going to the doctor....out of hours if that's all that's open. Better to make the journey and have some comfort if he's fine.

Or if he needs some treatment, at least you're on top of it!

There nothing wrong with you-it's a perfectly understandable reaction given what has happened. Agree with calling 111 or gp for reassurance if you need it. My son had a febrile fit and I still crap myself when he has a temperature!

I totally sympathise! My son had pneumonia and then bronchitis after bronchitis as a baby, it got to the stage that as soon as he started coughing we'd be prescribed a strong antibiotic before they could here it on his chest - but he's now six years old and grown out of these chest infections for about 3 years. He's fit, healthy and sporty if that's any consolation but I do appreciate it feels like it will never end when you are in the thick of it xx

I do worry about the long term effects all these infections are having on his lungs so that's reassuring.
I was pushed tI see a specialist but the hospital have said theres not alot they can do or diagnose untill he is 1.
His temp is perfect at the minute bit I just know how quickly a cough can turn into something worse with him I feel so sad about it I feel like he doesn't get time to be happy as he I always poorly and I think I really am shocked and scared after last time

He's so lucky to have you for a mum. He's happy as long as you're nearby - never underestimate this.

Yes, spring is on the way! Is your house nice and airtight and dry OP? No signs of any damp or mold?

We've had a problem with mould in our living room had it removed and the outside the pointed. He's been quite wheezy today doctors said that as long as he us feeding and not struggling too hard with his breathing he should be ok!

You don't use a Perfect Prep machine do you? I'm only asking in relation to all the recent hype about babies constantly getting viruses and being unwell and the mould that lives in some of the PP machines.

I work on a Paediatric Unit for infants aged 0-2 and between October and March we are full to the brim with bronchiolitic babies, some of whom get very ill, so your worries are completely normal considering how poorly your boy has been in the past.

I hope he overcomes this and you avoid another admission

My ds has whooping cough at 2 weeks old and bronchiolitis on and off til he was a year old.

Long stays in hospital on and off.
He is nearly 16 with absolutely no long lasting effects.
He is a keen boxer and gym fanatic!!

I hear you. My dd2 isn't even 4 months and she's been hospitalised 3 times for bronchiolitis and once for flu. It's a bugger but I'm learning to roll with it now.

I have read that they don't cause long term damage to the lungs. I know exactly how you feel, My dd had septicaemia when she was two and the doctor sent us home saying not to worry. We took her to hospital as I knew it wasn't right. Thank god I did. You just have to trust your instincts, know what the signs are and just as importantly remember that not many illnesses aren't / won't lead to anything serious. All the time they're getting bigger and stronger too.
I ended up developing anxiety over it but now feel more confident and you do relax with time.
Don't feel bad about calling for advice too.

It's soo good to hear of other children who have had similar and have no long term effects.

I wouldn't wish it up on any other baby bit it's nice knowing it's common and there's others in the same boat I just have unbelievable anxiety after last time we were rushed to the Dr's station in a and e with the nurses shouting grunting baby I think about it all the time it makes me feel sick it mat sound dramatic but I dream about it he was so poorly but dis recover in 4 days!
Roll on summer is all I can say.

Dd had bronchiolitis twice quite severely as a baby, on ng tube and oxygen box etc for a week when tiny. It's horrible, I sympathise. But it is something they grow out of as their tubes grow bigger, so hopefully this will be the last season he has it. Dd is 7 now and through a still a bit prone to colds and viral wheeze she hasn't been ill with it since a baby. Also, it's a virus (rsv, same as the common cold) rather than an infection, so on its own it won't cause permanent damage. Hope he's on the mend soon.
