Dm was on the phone to me and she said to me I've been sat with my legs crossed meaning she needed the loo. Dh also hold his crutch when he needs to go surely adults know that none of this helps.my two year old dd does this but she doesn't know any better.

It does help though...

My 6 year old bounces up and down. Surely that's only going to make it worse?

Squeezing thighs helps - it puts pressure on your urethra. But crossing legs isn't good because it compresses your abdomen area. Best to sit with legs apart but thighs squeezing towards each other.

I've always thought it odd that people (women in particular) cross their legs if they're bursting for a wee. The only thing I find helps is clenching my pelvic floor muscles. I've known people who jiggle about and even bounce up and down which I've always thought would make it worse!

I jiggle and bounce- it helps because instead of applying a steady 'squeeze' on your muscles, which tires them quickly, you end up alternating between pelvic floor squeezes and external pressure on the urethra.

Plus it takes your mind off it a little!

Crossing your legs allows your pelvic floor to be squished passively, rather than actively. But the bending from the hips required to get one leg over the other can negate the effect. Crossing at the ankle is better.

Crossed legs standing up is the most effective 'crossed legs' position.

I have to cross legs standing if i need to cough or sneeze..

I must admit I've never seen a grown man grabbing his crotch when he needs a wee.

I just don't get why grown adults don't bloody well take themselves to the toilet when they need it! A woman at work thinks she's so indispensable that she can't possibly leave her desk for two minutes to go to the loo will sit there saying she needs a wee for a good couple of hours before she finally goes.

I just can't imagine a grown man actually holds himself when he needs a wee!

Having had the mother of a cold and cough for 2 weeks I can confirm that crossing your legs doesn't always help. I have peed myself in public on numerous occasions this week - and I had CSs.

I caught DP doing a strange walk around the kitchen the other day. "Will you just bloody well go to the loo?" "How did you know?"
