To think this doesn't count as cooking me dinner

Picture this scene:

DH has previously said he's cooking dinner tonight. Steak with accompaniments.

DH appears in the living room and announces that he's off to have a shower as he didn't have one this morning, he's set the timer on the oven to tell me when dinner's ready, and it'll go off in 18 mins.

I'm sat on the sofa breastfeeding DS3, so am not in an ideal position to be attending to the dinner and the steak that DH had left cooking in a frying pan on the hob.

AIBU to think that I shouldn't have had to tell DH to rethink his shower plans, when he'd volunteered himself to do dinner? DH clearly thought he'd done his bit by getting it started.

Yanbu but if you're hungry I suggest uou at least sort your steak out. Leave his and say you assumed he wanted his cooked for 18 minutes.

Even at a minimum heat on the hob, 18 minutes is pushing it.

18 minutes cooked steak? No thanks must of been like out boot what a waste!

If someone says they are cooking I would expect them to get the food out of the oven unless they couldn't because of doing something important like seeing to a child, a shower IMO is not Important why not wait till morning

I think I'd be shouting after him, no, to turn it off until he's ready to sort it all out!

Turning the cooker on and walking away is NOT doing dinner!

... And 18mins for his steak....?! Is that half a cow Wink

Frying a steak for 18 mins?? Just pick up the nearest boot and chow down. What a bloody waste of steak.
And a lame effort overall at 'making you dinner'. Bulls. He'd have done better ordering a takeaway and showering in the half hour they take to arrive. Cheeky sod.

An old boot steak and you had to get it out the oven youself as he so couldn't wait until morning (which is few hours away) for a shower. That is not cooking , it's doing a half arsed job

Steak cooked on minimum - Ew. YANBU. That will be grey and rank. It needs to be a nice hot pan.

Sounds like my DH. Does he also volunteer to clear away and then leave everything "in soak"?

I'm suspecting a deliberate half arsed job.

A oven cooked meal from the freezer would be a much better choice for fitting in showers while it's cooking.

Not that I think having a shower while a dinner (that can happily be left unattended) cooks in the oven is all that sensible.

If he hadn't actually put the steak on then there is a possibility that the meal would be ready in 18 minutes and that he expects to be back from the shower in say 8 minutes to attend to the last details.
Alternatively he has no idea how to cook a steak!

What a waste of steak. The ribeye I had tonight took 4 minutes!

If you weren't ready for the timer, then it's his dinner ruined, too. Muppet! (Him, not you!)

Setting a timer for when the meal will be ready to eat is no problem, just work backwards to get the start times of all the elements. Simple enough.

The whole timer concept is simple, yes. I know how to work backwards for getting a meal all ready together.

The aggravating bit is having someone else essentially say "I've got it started, I'm off for a shower while it cooks" when
(a) they said previously they were cooking a meal - a meal that's not really compatible with the cook taking a shower break while it's cooking, and
(b) I'm in the middle of breastfeeding a baby who's likely to get upset and screamy if detached from the breast so I can go and take over the cooking.

YANBU, OP. There is an issue here whereby your DP is treating his shower as non-negotiable, whilst everything else - dinner, baby, your own needs - have to be navigated by you so his routine doesn't change. He started dinner, he should finish it. Let it burn?
