That Gumtree is a waste of time!

I have had a clear out recently and have had stuff listed on Gumtree. Why do people bother to ask me "is this still available", I reply to say yes and then I never hear from them again? Or they do respond, arrange a time for collection and not turn up?

I am also having issues with trying to purchase stuff via Gumtree. If I ask is it still available, have the decency to respond! And if it's sold, remove the sodding advert!

Today I found a high chair on Gumtree local to me, I ask is it still available they say yes, we arrange a time to come collect and then an hour before I get a message to say, it's now been sold - despite the arrangement for me to collect it.

I was hoping Gumtree would be better than eBay, but it seems less reliable!

Anyone else have these issues with Gumtree or is it just me!?!

If you can join a local facebook page

It's by the far the easiest way to buy and free cycle stuff - post it on a Saturday morning and it's will be gone by the end of the weekend one way or another

Gumtree better than freeads but agree local fb is better

I have sold quite a lot on Gumtree but yes get so sick of all the time wasters. Why ask if it's still available when you have no intention of buying it?!

Gumtree is owned by ebay. With none of the financial protection.

Replies to my Gumtree ads end up in my Spam folder. I have to remember to look every so often and then it's usually too late to reply to inquiries.

Local FB is the way to go. I wouldn't buy anything from Gumtree

It's all a waste it time! When LO was 2 I started getting rid of all his baby clothes, was selling bin liners full of clothes. Mainly from shops like next, mother care and mamas and papas, a few designer things we had bought for us too.

Was selling bin liners off with £100s for like £20-30 a bag, took pictures of the most expensive items with a neat pile of stuff on the back ground. And an inventory of what was in each bundle.

Had people asking me to photograph each item of clothing before they would buy, offered them to come round and view, now takers. Literally hundreds of things to photograph. I would earn pence an hour selling...

It just all ended up in charity bins!

I've had some really good experiences of gumtree - buying and selling. But it is very unreliable - I think you have to take that into account. It is better for a bargain than anywhere else I've found, however.

We have sold quite a few bits on Gumtree including a car, double buggy and a happy land village. Also nabbed a part time job from Gumtree.

I do think you have to lool along the lines, unless they actually turn up its not sold. Enquiries are just that, it's not worth stressing over.

Didn't know they were owned by eBay though

I've sold a good few things on Gumtree, takes a while sometimes though. I sympathise with you with regards to time wasters, I just don't get it, very odd.

What is gumtree for? A bit of everything? Ive even seen people advertising freelance english teaching on there.

I thought it was just selling stuff.

Selling stuff on Gumtree works but you just need to respond to each enquiry with the address and a few timeslots that you'll be in and say there are others interested. Don't try and deal with one person at a time because there are so many timewasters. First come first served. Then when it's sold text the others that they've missed out so they don't keep turning up.

I have had that same experience with Gumtree (i.e. "is it still available?"; "yes it is" and then you never hear from them again. I do sell bits and pieces on Gumtree but I do find our local Facebook page useful as someone has helpfully pointed out as an alternative.

I wouldn't say it was a waste of time because we've had some good results including selling our car within half an hour, and we've cleared out some big items like a garden gate that needed to be sold locally. Lots of people are a real pain as they mess you about but I've had plenty of that on Ebay too, and the local selling mag. I think whenever and however you are selling stuff you will get ill-mannered idiots!
