Is prosecco a girl's drink?

My son turns 18 next week. Thinking of giving him a bottle of prosecco (he's not into lager etc!). DH says it's a girls drink.

I don't understand prosecco - it tastes like Andrews Liver Salts, but I seem to be the only person who thinks this. It probably is enjoyed more by women than by men, but so I champagne; and, if your son doesn't like lager, maybe he will like it?

It's fine, just try to get a glass of it, obv. We're about to open some and DH will probably get most of it as he drinks it faster than I do.

Surely for an 18th you'd get champagne though? I got my DD a pink champagne in an engraved box (from GettingPersonal.co.uk) amongst other things....I do prefer Prosecco tho! But no, it's not a girls drink only! My DH loves it and he's as manly as you get! 6 ft 3, 48 inch chest and a scary cop. He drinks some every week night

I would say more women drink it than man but not as dramatic a ratio as beer. I'd get some champagne.

Swanky spirits are good for older teens as they can share with friends, for e.g. A limited edition bottle like the sour cherry Jim Beam or my parents got me a lovely bottle organic gin for my 19th.

If your son likes it then buy him it.
I don't get the obsession myself, but then I don't like any type of wine/fizzy wine etc.
My FB is always full of people talking about it, in that irritating, 'cheeky', way, ugh.
Cheeky biscuits/cake during the week, cheeky Prosecco at the weekend.
I even heard woman talking about it on the train the other week, "ooh Amanda, we'll have a cheeky Prosecco on Friday".

Obviously the idea that only girls (or boys) can drink a certain drink is (or ought to be) inherently silly.

The caveat though is that prosecco does seem to be marketed at women in the UK. if you do a Google image search for 'prosecco gift set' they often come with body lotions, scented candles or flowers -you don't get similar gift sets for most other drinks.

I've also seen women's t-shirts with captions about drinking prosecco, in the same way some highstreet shops have 'beer' themed t-shirts for men.

There have been newspaper articles about how prosecco is now the go-to drink for Essex girls, and when there was a prosecco shortage there were headlines asking 'what is a girl to do'.

It's stupid and you should get your son whatever he wants and obviously people should drink whatever on earth they want, however, if you asked me to name a drink that is marketed towards women in the UK, Prosecco would have probably been my first answer.

Prosecco is vile. DH and I are in agreement with that. We cracked open what our friends told us was a great one. It was grim- we tipped it straight down the sink.

Now gin, on the other hand ...

I would get Champagne for an 18th though.

There was a time Rosé wine was for 'Girls'
20/20 was for girls
Alcopops were for young girls

Etc.

They're just drinks.

DJKKSlider - yup, I think a lot of things originally come to market advetised as being for women and then men try it, like it, and the "girl's drink" tag is lost.

Sadly, about half of men would still be too uncomfortable to order it in a bar though.

Prosecco o'clock does tend to be a woman's thing. And we girls used to have prosecco nights before we found the joys of gin (another women's drink!).

But then DH likes it too occasionally and he is definitely a blokey bloke.
