To think teenagers shouldn't watch GOT?

Got less than usual to do at home today and haven't watched Game of Thronea since season 3, so thought I'd buy a box set on demand of season 4. It's great, and I am reasonably unflappable myself (burned through all four series of Spartacus) but...

...the rapes, the orgies, the stabbing and mutilations...the rapes! I just watched one episode where the renegade Night Watch men are shouting 'fuck them to death' as various naked girls are raped in the background.

Is there anyone who has watched this with their teen? I know lots of MNs are anti-censorship and their 14 and 15 olds want to and are allowed to watch GOT, but there is no way I would be letting my kids watch this before 18.

My teens have shown no interest in watching it. They only watch TV with us - tho do allow over 18 violent /swearing films no way could I watch sex stuff in their company!!

None of the teens I work with ever mention it when we discuss tv etc either

YANBU it is ridiculously violent. Rape, brutal murders and executions, torture and even killing babies and children Sad I think some parents who allow their teens to watch it might not realise how extreme it actually is - they probably think it's a fantasy along the lines of Lord of the Rings but it's much worse.

I can't imagine that you'd be able to censor the viewing of a 17 year old but from what you describe I certainly wouldn't allow a young teenager to watch it.

I wouldn't say it's overly an issue for 14/15 year olds to watch. I would engage them with conversation about what they've watched, their understanding of the issues. Although I couldn't abide the Ramsey Snow stuff, torture scenes, just yuk. Even in the books I would skip those sections.

I do not believe there is a correlation between a teenager watching GoT and them thinking bad behaviour is OK. That would lead me to say if you have an emotionally immature 14/15 year old, then it wouldn't be a good idea.

My 19yo DS has been watching it since he was 16yo. I'd rather he watched GOT than Geordie Shore/ Towie/ Ex on the Beach like some of my friends teens do.

It's not appropriate at all

I know teens will watch what they like but I definitely would not be encouraging it, buying the box sets etc for them (or merchendise)

I think I'd have watched it at 16 but not earlier. Even now there's bits where I close my eyes and I remember the episode where little finger kills the baby had me in tears and saying it shouldn't have been shown - I'm fairly unflappable usually.

DD is in a mixed year 1 and 2 class and I know boys in year 2 watch walking dead as she's talked to m about what they've said. I think there's being sensible with censorship and outright not protecting a degree of innocence. Without the nuance and ability to understand the context I struggle to see what entertainment they get from it.

I'm less fussy about violence in be context of fantasy/dystopia because I think young minds can easily distinguish between the real and the imagined. Sexual content is different. GOT is borderline pornographic, really.

I think what a PP said, that many parents let their DCs watch it without watching it themselves because they think, 'Meh, can't be that bad', is probably true.

We police what the DC watch. The younger they are, they try to mimic adults, even if they don't fully understand what is going on, or what it even means. For a 14/15 year old you would hope they know that rape, chopping people's genitals off etc, isn't the done thing.

I agree. I certainly don't want my 14 year old watching it. He's very law abiding though and wouldn't, he'd be horrified at the very thought of watching something not for his age group. He had autism so is very literal.

Older teens its fair but the content is too emotionally beyond young teens. Rven thougg a lot of kids have seen porn by 14/15 there's something about ok-ing them to watch GOT that makes me feel funny.

That said, id rather they watched GOT which deals with how sexual violence was in an era of time than a bunch of reality TV nobodies making a career out of sleeping around and arguing on screen (tginking Made in chelsea, Geordie Shore, ex on the beach etc).

I was 15 when season 1 was first aired in the U.K. in 2011....I watched it.
I think some of the content has got more extreme as the seasons have gone on, but I don't think it's ridiculously extreme - there's a hell of a lot worse out there. I'm a horror film obsessive, and watched some pretty horrendous horror films (think Cannibal Holocaust etc) in my early teens without lasting damage

Dd started watching it at 16 there is a big difference between 13 & 16 tbf. I hate GOT the nudity the sexual violence is all so unneccesary imo but lots of people love it
