Aibu Changing matt up or down?

Now you might think I am crazy but....changing matt up or down.

Please see picture..

Someone told me if you changed it so the lip (so animals are upside down) was at the bottom and if my little boy weed it would collect in the bottom instead of dribbling onto the floor. I assumed it was so baby wouldn't push themselves off.

I've used this upside down for four months and it's saved my carpet on many occasions.

So aibu Is it meant to be that way or the other? Is it something everyone knows or am I just doing it wrong?

Why would that be unreasonable? If it works for you then carry on doing it.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 08/02/2017 19:40

Never knew this. So much piss has gone everywhere. Wish I had known that! Grin

BoredOnMatLeave · 08/02/2017 19:43

FFS 6 months of piss on the carpet and now I find out.

GummyGoddess · 08/02/2017 19:52

Would the pictures not be the other way up then? No good for me anyway, ds pees on his face Hmm

salemtheteenagecat · 08/02/2017 19:56

Life saver...all that wee saved Wink sorry for the wee in the face not thought of a solution for that one Grin

About the pictures yes that's what I thought if it was to be used the other way surely the pictures would be an indicator.

Just wondered if this was how other people used it or I've made it up and hit lucky because it works

I would have thought it would be upside down because if the pics. However, genius idea wish I'd known - too late now.

dementedpixie · 08/02/2017 20:03

I used to put a disposable changing pad thing on top of the changing mat and that absorbed any stray pee

hazeyjane · 08/02/2017 20:04

Never had a wee on the floor...maybe I've been lucky! Doesn't a nappy get whipped under pretty quickly?

Cantchooseaname · 08/02/2017 20:04

Puppy pad on changing mat.

hazeyjane · 08/02/2017 20:05

Also if they wee on the mat whichever way up, wouldn't it just seep up the back causing a pee flood?

Heirhelp · 08/02/2017 20:06

How did I don't know this?!

This is a complete game changer.

whateverandever · 08/02/2017 20:08

You are using it upside down, but if it works for you then why not?

I've never once had wee run off the bottom in years of using it the right way round though. My tip for this is to place the new clean nappy under baby's bum before removing the dirty nappy. We also have small towels on the changing mat, absorbs any spillage and stops mat being cold.

hazeyjane · 08/02/2017 20:09

I completely don't get it!

Fold old nappy under bum, clean put new nappy on. Why is pee flooding everywhere? And unless you are changing at the top of a hill wouldn't the pee go under the baby?

I am dense.

salemtheteenagecat · 08/02/2017 20:18

All I can say is boys are unpredictable and even if you have a nappy underneath one comes off a new one under but if they did decide they would like to shower you if it hits the sides it runs down the little sides and saves at the bottom not going under there back either.

The cushioned end is to stop baby banging their head and did so many times for DD.

whateverandever · 08/02/2017 20:57

Yes toomuch thats what I thought. As they get bigger the cushioned end stops them bashing head of using mat on a changing table.

2 boys here OP and I have no experience of these rivers of wee you describe Smile Try the towel on top of mat idea. We got a load of cheap mini hand towels from Ikea which get changed every couple of days or if soiled. A lot better than catching it in a pool on an upside down mat, no?

OneWithTheForce · 08/02/2017 21:00

Why are people changing babies on carpet?? Shock one quick flip as you've got pooslosion all over your carpet! Bathroom every time.

OneWithTheForce · 08/02/2017 21:01

and you've got.

JassyRadlett · 08/02/2017 21:01

I don't think either of mine would ever have weed in such an obliging way. DS1's specialty was up the wall. One time he got himself squarely in the eye.

skerrywind · 08/02/2017 21:12

I never used a changing mat- just a hand towel on the floor. Never had wee on the carpet during a nappy change.

TathitiPete · 08/02/2017 22:18

DS is 10 months and has only ever peed once during a change. So I use mine with the cushioning at his head. There's no animals on mine though to be all upside-down looking.
