to expect that bus drivers should at least understand the basic principles of currency even if they're not able to do basic arithmetic?

so i had to get the bus to the surgery yesterday cause ds was being horrendously sick. the exchange with the bus driver went something like this:
Me: £1.40 fare to xxxxx Rd please
BD: It's £1.50 now, the fares went up on the 18th
Me: Are you sure? I took this journey last week and it was still £1.40 [some of the other fares have gone up though]
BD: Oh no, you're right, it's £1.40

I gave him a £1 coin, a 20p piece and 4 5p pieces, and he said "i need another one of these" pointing at the 20p piece. and i said, "but that would make it £1.60!" and so he just repeated what he said! by this time i'm getting all prickly under my armpits and embarassed cause everyone was staring at me, and panickin about missing ds's appointment, so i counted out the 5p's for him in a really slow and loud voice, and the driver just grunted at me and shut the doors and drove off without even waiting for me to sit down! luckliy i had ds in the sling, because if i'd had him in the buggy it would have flown backwards and i'd've been squished up against the front window!

am i being unreasonable??!

Fairly typical of bus driver I think...

Our local bus company will not give change! so if you don't have the right money then tough luck!

We don't even give it to the driver - it goes down a shute - so he doesn't have to do anything apart from drive the bus!

so no you are not being unreasonable at all!

theUrbanDryad · 27/02/2007 08:21

cod - no, he wasn't english, but surely they're trained on things like this???

i think bus drivers have to go to special obnoxiousness college before they get their PSV license!

We have quite a few lady bus drivers who are really rather pleasant...

Actually the drivers are usually polite enough - especially as DD always says hello and thank you when we get off the bus..

Perhaps they go to charm school here before being given license - or perhaps its just because they don't have to deal with the money side of things (see earlier thread)...

was on a bus in brighton the other day and I gave driver my fare.....he kept on grunting at me and I didn't understand - it was because I had put the money in the wrong place, he wanted it in a little tray......and gestured that that's what I should do. Not a please, thank you or next time just place the money here. rude git

15 years later and a single fair is £2.40 or capped at £4 😱 . That's not bad at all.
