To ask about your KS1 children please?

Posting here for traffic.

Related to an assignment I'm working on for my Access course. I've got to do a hypothetical lesson plan and don't currently have any experience with KS1 age children (my DD is only 2).

Do your children of this age know their left and right?

My ds2 is 5, in year 1. He has known his left/right for a couple of years now

I just tested my dd who is in year 1 and she knows her left and right.

Completely depends on the child. My dh is 36 and still has to stop and think about it!

Depends on the child, my Dts are 6 . One gets it the other doesn't.
I used to be a ta, what subject are you planning for ?

I can report my 3yo (she's almost 4), 5yo Y1 & 6yo Y2 all know their left from right Smile

Yes my Y1 DD has just shown me her left and right. She picks up a pen (as if to write) to make sure.

My KS1 5 year old does.
My KS2 7 year old only knows at the moment as he has a black nail on his left hand. Normally he would need to think about it.
At 37 I have to think very hard about it.

Thanks everyone. So some do some don't. I'm doing a hypothetical lesson plan for KS1 geography Lucy . Finding it challenging as I've not worked in a school yet (currently looking for work experience)

My reception age 5 child does, but only really in relation to the fact he is left handed. Not sure about the other two. Generally they get it right 50% of the time Grin

I thought my 5 yo dts did, but I just asked them and they both got in a muddle Confused dt2 started telling me where North and South is. So...they SOMETIMES know it Smile

My just turned 7 year old daughter, and my 5 year old son (in reception year) both know!

I'm a KS1 teacher (mixed year 1/2 class) and most seem to recognise their left and right although not necessarily consistently. What is your lesson plan on? Can I help?

I am 52 and don't know my left from my right! Grin

No seriously- the year ones I worked with last year I would say about half of them reliably knew left from right and they were a bright little bunch. For some of them it was related to which hand they held their pencil in and if they need the special green scissors!

I'm 28 and need to think about it. Picture myself in a car, or do the "mole check" (I have to characteristic moles on my right arm).

5 yr old - yr 1. Only knows his left becuase thats the hand he writes with. Took me years to work out - only way it stuck was your thumb ad finger form an L shape on left hand

The part I'm struggling with is the part that asks me to analyse the learning needs of an identified group Confused As I don't work in a school yet I've got to use a hypothetical group so I went for KS1 geography.

I've picked the bit of the curriculum I want to do which is about left, right and basic north, south, East West. I've got some ideas and found some resources on TES website.

But I'm struggling with the first bit; do you think it means like who knows what, certain students with different learning styles that sort of thing..?

Ks2 teacher here. My 5yo son who's in reception knows left and right, most of the time!
If you're analysing learning needs I'd suggest you'd need to identify that there will likely be a group in the class who don't know left and right and that would have to be taught before doing the rest of the lesson. You'd need to be aware of those kids during the lesson and have some support for them maybe.
Maybe you'd also have to think about the fact that there may also be a group that know the compass directions already and you may have to extend the lesson for them, so doing north east , south West etc. Hope that helps.
