To be sad that bingo callers have lost their edge?

Took MIL to the bingo (big chain) tonight. God it was so boring, the caller droning on "2 and 8, 28; 4 and 5, 45; on its own, number 2; all the 1s, 11". Aibu to expect some classic bingo nicknames at bingo?
"Garden Gate" "Key to the Door" "Top of the Shop"

YABU.

Gaming law states that the winner has to call on the winning number and not any number afterwards.

If you're calling 'Dinner for two, 6 and 9' (or whatever), how do you judge when the actual number has been called and at which point someone claiming on the previous number has lost that claim?

Rather dry answer, sorry. But bingo is big bucks and heavily regulated.

Ah so it's the commercialisation, regulation and popularity which has led to the demise of the traditions?

Gotta admit when I've gone the amount of times people have missed their call so didn't win and it's often the £1000 houses I'm sure the traditional calling would make it more difficult

The callers know when there's a claim to be had too - they get a red flag on their screen. But they aren't allowed to 'intervene' - pause, make any change to their speech pattern, etc.

Didn't they use both in the past; 'two little ducks, 22' and all that?

I can't imagine bingo halls find it easy in this day and age, what with internet gaming, not to mention all the other forms of entertainment out there, and at home.

Still I thought they had something, I don't go much anymore there was a period of about 4 months I went 3-4 times a week, and at least covered my night on the biggest package but often leaving winning over £100 more than my spend, I once won 8 times in one night and people were actually getting nasty shouting stuff at me. I guess I got intimidated at bingo

I've not been to bingo before. How does it work, my local Gala says there are sessions costing £1, £5, £10, £15, or free depending on the time of day. What does that get you? Don't you still have to buy bingo cards?

I do have some advice as to how you can more fully enjoy your bingo experience but I'm not sure if your MIL would be on board....

Rose it depends on how many books you want to play at my local I think it's 5/6 for 6 cards (6 cards to a book) but you also can do electronic books and you can have 96 books, essentially they call out numbers you mark of what ones you have if you get one, two or three horizontal lines before anyone else you win the prize money

roses The advertised costs are the price of a book (or set number of books). 'Free' means you get free books, although obviously prize money is also low. It's a loss leader. The club makes money from selling lunches/drinks/on fruit machines/etc at a time when they'd usually be deadly quiet.

I worked at gala for years, the game changed a lot when the national bingo game was introduced. It was deemed that there was such a lot of money at stake that the different sayings were no longer allowed. There is a lot of money involved so just the actual numbers were called. You may find at some of the smaller bingo clubs, like a village hall or somewhere like that , the caller will still go through all the sayings.
Not only that, the games all had a certain time to be played and there wasn't enough time for all the sayings and all the players going " quack quack " 😀
And if you have ever played bingo abroad in a hotel, oh my god, we were provided with a cocktail stick to "Mark " the numbers and each number was said in several different languages ! Probably the prize was about £4 😀
