To be annoyed at my employer

It's 31st January and I started a new job a few weeks ago.

I've been assured at least five times that I would be paid today for all the work I'd done in January. It's now time to get up for work and I've discovered they haven't paid me.

I've got direct debits coming out this morning, I'm now overdrawn (I had to change the date with my pay date moving too) and have no idea if it's even possible to sort this today to get my wages.

It just may not have gone into your account yet. I pay my staff and me the same way every month and occasionally it is after 9 am when the money goes in. I haven't checked this morning yet but give it a few hours before complaining.

They may well be running the payroll today, doesn't necessarily mean the money will arrive in your account today however, especially if it's the first time payment.

A pain, but I don't think I'd have relied so heavily on it happening the exact day they said.

I checked online and any faster payments usually go into my bank account at 2.30am, I know this as I've been on a night out like we all do when younger and constantly checking it!

I start work at 8, so if it's not there by then I can speak to the accountant and try and find out what's happened - they're a decent bunch and it could've just been an oversight as I know they've been so so busy! I need to buy a monthly season ticket this morning for the train and I'm now overdrawn waiting for this money to go in. It's a huge pain that's all.

Dusty - I was told on Friday 'It will 1000% be in your account on tuesday' by the company accountant. So I don't think I was naive in any way for relying on that happening.

If they have paid by BACS then it may not clear till business banking hours, usually 9am? IME most payroll is paid by BACS as processing charges much lower than for faster payments?

I have absolutely no idea how it works!

I worked for a huge national firm for years until December and it was always in my bank ready for direct debits to come out of my account that day. I've moved to a much smaller firm now, it's a company however which employs about 1000 people and runs payroll every week for them which hits their account first thing in the morning (if it didn't the employees would go crazy). However now, I've had four direct debits come out leaving me overdrawn under the assumption it'd be paid this morning.

If I'd have known this I'd have changed the date to the first, I'm in a good job and had no knowledge of this happening at all.

If they do the transfers with the faster payment system they don't have to do anything till 2pm and the money will still be in your account by the end of the day.

The company accountant swore it would go in today and I would be inclined to trust that - but do check after lunch to ensure it has happened.

Sometimes our payroll is processed on the day, which means my salary doesn't show when I leave work, but has credited when I reach home thirty minutes later. Frustrating when it's the weekend and not sure if it will credit. My employer has been known to pay a day late.

If it's manual payroll, it'll be later in the day. They may well have someone making individual transfers.

Employers very rarely pay you via FPS. They usually use BACS instead, so the money won't go into your account until business hours.

It won't hurt to check. Not that it helps but all our direct debits go out the day or 2 after pay day ( allows for clearance of funds.)

I'm on my way to work now hence the slowness in replying. I'll check again after 9 and then if nothing is there I'll pop up and check it's definitely been done.

I just didn't know this is a thing, then again I've always worked for national companies so it's always been there for waking up.

"on Tuesday" means by close of business Tuesday not 5am.

I run the payroll in my business and it's get paid when I've finished running everything and made my RTI submission. This could be anytime between 11am and 4pm. I'm sure your payment will be in today.

BACS payments are standard for payroll, and would have had to be processed on Friday latest to be in today - they show at the start of the day.

Have you definitely been told payday is today? (granted, towards the end of the month is normal)

Did you definitely give in your bank details etc?

Sounds like your finance department will need to do a manual same day payment (FPS) today, for approximately 2/3 of your expected gross pay.

Anything less I would consider very poor service - this will need doing before 4pm, so you need to get on to it straight away to allow them time to get the electronic approvals etc - ususally from two staff.

Like others, I expect you'll get the money today. If it bothers you, use your online bank messaging service to tell them what's going on, that way you've made a reasonable effort not to go overdrawn.

My sister is a HR Manager and said she would've expected the same as you stated in regards to a BACS payment, so I'm going to wait until 9, if there's nothing there I'll query it.

I'm really lucky our company accountant is just upstairs and I sit next to two directors so if it is just a mistake I'll have no doubt they'll sort it all out immediately. Definitely gave my bank details on my first day too, I remember doing it and taking extra care to write it as clear as possible.

I'd be worried about the company accountant using "1000%" but that's me being petty.
